The greatest take away I learned from the resources regarding burnout, secondary trauma, and compassion fatigue is how common it is to experience among counselors. Though I knew all of these factors existed, I was unaware how likely it is for a counselor to experience at least one of these or all of them throughout their career.

Self Care is vital when working in any form of helping profession because it allows the workers to remain emotionally well and mentally present for the clients that are being supported. By maintaining our own mental and emotional well-being, clients are able to feel better supported and taken care of throughout their time in therapy.

An activity I plan to practice is prioritizing personal time with my loved ones to enjoy fun activities I love to do such as shopping, going to restaurants, and traveling. With this, I will engage in regular physical activity like cardio and lifting weights, to manage my stress and well-being. Both of these strategies benefit my mental well-being because while helping theirs manage their struggles, I will have many outlets to release any built up stress or burn out I may be feeling.
