You can definitely show emotions as a teacher, but know that there are ways to self-regulate, to maintain a baseline with how you show emotions to students. Emotionally dysregulating towards students can affect the relationship, the trust and the respect they have for you.

In favour:

In an early childhood or primary environment it is important for students to know that it is ok to express emotions and how you are feeling especially in difficult situations. The best way to display this is to express your own emotions. This can be in the form of just saying, I'm feeling a little stressed today or I am in a really good mood today because my kid made me a cup of coffee this morning.

If the emotions being expressed are not relevant to the current situation than I don't believe they should be expressed. Teachers should not bring emotions from outside the classroom and take the out on the students. Also expressing emotions about situations that have passed can cause confusion and unwanted behaviours from the students.

Against:

There are times where a teacher showing emotions can be inappropriate. For instance, straight up yelling with full aggression and anger at students when overwhelmed is unacceptable and should not occur. It's ok to get upset teachers are still human, but there is never a need to reach that level. Furthermore, crying although a healthy way of showing emotion. My personal belief is that if a teacher is at the point of bawling their eyes out or deep sadness then they should remove themselves from the classroom and allow another teacher to take over whilst they compose themselves.

Teachers are not robots. We have emotions, things go wrong and things can be out of our control. It is important that you try your best to model your behaviour to your students, they watch everything you do. If you are having a bad day yourself, let the students know, encourage them that it is ok to let their emotions out in a healthy way, this might be a great opportunity to share resources with your students.

In favour:

We as teachers, educate students on how to manage and deal with our emotions and how to self regulate. It is unreasonable not allowing teachers to show emotions in front of students as this then becomes hypocritical. Why teach students about emotions if their teachers can’t show emotion. Obviously these emotions demonstrated need to be within reason and appropriate. For example, dealing with reactions of anger need to be modelled in an appropriate way in front of the students like self regulating through breathing etc. when a teacher feels angry they should, under no circumstance, become physical or aggressive towards the students. Emotions and reactions like this however are not appropriate for teachers to demonstrate.

This can also allow children to better express their emotions, as children can see teachers showing how they would show or express their emotions, and this also allows them to teach the students about emotions and how they can express and identify them.
