Adrienne Rich’s 1991 poem “Dedications” gives her the platform to acknowledge her readers in a metaphysical way. It is unclear whether or not Rich is recognizing specific people from her personal life or fantasizing about the nameless readers she will never meet; it is up to the reader to decide. It is also up to the reader to determine if this even has an effect on the integrity and meaning of the poem. Herein lies the crux of the matter, most exemplified in lines 18-28. In this passage, Rich displays the intricacies of individuality and shared experience, depicting scenarios the reader may not have lived, but can empathize with and relate to.

“Dedications” toggles between the shared and the personal, opening the reader up to looking at humanity from a dualistic point of view. The characters and dedicants described in the poem show the reader both the individual practices and hardships of humans, while the poem itself brings the existence of these identities together. Both viewpoints are integral to analysis of the poem in order for the reader to see the unimportance of whether or not Rich is referencing people from her personal life. Through this writing, Rich dedicates the poem to all her readers, all those who see their reflections in the light of those she has shown.
