In this speech, the spectator is left to view the scene passively. This is because we just accept that people support him and accept the heavenly characteristic the people give to King. The use of symmetrical shots and low angles also highlight these godly attributes. We, as an audience, are most active when the audience in the scene. When they holler in support, we feel their support and in turn, we share their feelings.

This scene causes passive spectatorship due to the performance of the actors. As the story progresses, the audience develop an understanding of Ree's character and so it is understandable and expected that she gets emotional when talking to her mum.

The most active spectatorship is during the first bridge scene attack. This is it's a very harsh scene with violence. It's further intensified by contrapuntal sound, slow motion shots and the smokey background. It's very emotional as the non-diabetic sound really intensifies the scene to sway our feelings into sadness.

The sound is heightened in this scene as diegetic and non-diegetic sound is used at the same time. This creates a chaotic feeling to the scene which reflects the stress that the character of Ree is feeling at this dramatic point in the film.

Throughout Winter's Bone a passive spectatorship is established yet in scenes of violence, there is mainly active spectatorship. This is because you may feel emotionally understanding of Ree and so when she is being beaten up, you would feel sympathetic towards her or angry to the women inflicting the violence.

In the scene where Annie Lee Cooper attempts to apply to vote, we are made to be more active spectators as we feel anger as she is quickly denied. This infuriates a contemporary viewer as it's so discriminatory and emphasises the mistreatment of black people.
