South Liverpool Linking Lives - Befriending Service

We are now approaching our second year and have had a fantastic year, matching 20 more isolated older people with volunteers for friendship and regular visits, and reaching a further 50 people aged over 60 in South Liverpool with our weekly activity groups and quarterly outings. As we head into our third year, we would love to share with you some info on our upcoming events …

Social Clubs

We continue to run our social clubs for over 60s on a twice weekly basis, helping older people to create friendships, explore new (or old) interests, have fun, and feel part of their community again.

We run a group from 2-3.30pm every Wednesday at Mossley Hill Church. The first and last Wednesdays of each month are social groups, where members can chat and get to know each other over a cup of tea and a biscuit (with the occasional guest speaker or one-off activity scheduled throughout the year). The second Wednesday of each month is a board game group (we have a variety of games available to play or members are welcome to bring their own), and the third Wednesday is a gentle chair exercise class to support mobility and physical health. All groups are completely free and include refreshments.

We also run a Tuesday morning group in the café at Frontline church in Wavertree from 10am-12pm for a small charge, where members can take part in different activities each week including bingo, games and craft. We also provide a hot lunch once a month and every week you’ll find plenty of tea and cake!

Anyone is welcome to just turn up on the day, or please contact southliverpool@linkinglives.uk or call me (Hannah) on 07858570301 to find out more.

Autumn Outings

We are currently planning two outing for all our Linking Lives friends, volunteers and group members.

We will be taking in some of Liverpool’s iconic sights on the Mersey Ferry 50-minute River Explorer Cruise in September, with an optional visit to the U-Boat Story at Woodside terminal.

We are also planning to get together to watch Gentlemen Prefer Blondes at FACT Picturehouse cinema in town in October. The film is open to all but is enhanced to suit the needs of people living with dementia.

If you know anyone over 60 who may like to join us for either event, please get in touch at southliverpool@linkinglives.uk or on 07858570301 to find out more (places are limited and must be reserved).

Befriending

As always, one-to-one befriending is at the heart of what we do. Our approach involves linking volunteers (who are fully DBS checked, interviewed and trained) with older people requesting regular home visits, for company and a chat. Volunteers can also accompany their friend on short local outings, such as to a cafe or garden centre together, or may wish to partake in a hobby or activity they both enjoy together. These visits often become a highlight of the week for all involved and result in huge benefits to health and wellbeing.

Here is a lovely article in the Liverpool Echo about one of the friendships we have seen develop through the befriending service and how it is making a difference: https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/special-features/most-heartwarming-friendship-linking-lives-15777584

If you have any questions at all about the referral process, please do contact us at southliverpool@linkinglives.uk or call 07858570301.

We are also running a volunteer information and training evening on Wednesday 25th September for anyone who would like to find out more about what we do and potentially get involved!

Please get in touch if you have any questions at all about any of the above or about how we can support any of the individuals you work with. Also, please let me know if you do not wish to receive any further emails from us (we promise we very, very rarely send out email updates about our service).

Many thanks again for your support!

Best wishes,

Hannah

Hannah McLoughlin

Coordinator, South Liverpool Linking Lives

07858570301

South Liverpool Linking Lives
