The construction of The Hoover Dam began under the presidency of Herbert Hoover but was finished under the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The dam was not an original project of The New Deal per-se but it was finished with funds from the New Deal Project from the Public Works Administration in 1935.

The goals for the Hoover Dam included providing irrigation, water supply, used as a flood control, and years after it was built it also serves as a hydroelectric power generator. Currently, the Hoover Dam supplies irrigation to more than 1 million acres in the Unites States and Mexico. The dam also provides water to various cities in Nevada, California, and Arizona. In 1939 the construction of a power plant began and this provides energy of which 56% goes to Southern California and 25% goes to Nevada (Kennedy, 2018).

Kennedy, R. (2018, March 15).
Discuss how the improvement project affected the local community or state.

The Hoover dam affected the local community in many ways. One of the many ways is that before the construction of the dam there was an area now known as, Lake Mead, which was not a lake back then but it was home to Indian cultures and early settlers looking for religious freedom or riches. After the construction of the dam it created a reservoir which is currently Lake Mead. Lake Mead has since been a recreational area that allows boating and fishing and draws many visitors. (National Park Service, 2019).

Furthermore, Lake Mead supplies water to people in Nevada, Arizona, California, and Mexico. It is capable of holding up to 28.9 million acre-feet of water. (Nix, 2015). It is unfortunate that water levels have dropped significantly. We are currently at a crisis, the demand from cities has depleted water supplies to an all time low.

National Park Service. (February, 2019). Lake Mead History & Culture.
