FST 326 is both an enjoyable and challenging course. The 3-hour online structure is appropriate, giving you enough time to complete weekly tasks and activities. However, there are times when the allocated time isn’t enough, especially when a specific activity requires extensive research and consideration of the workload from other subjects. Despite this, the course allows you to effectively manage and prioritize tasks and activities. The industry tours and career seminars or talks were also valuable. These can be beneficial as you navigate your personal and professional career after completing the course. In the context of improving the learning process within this course, I highly recommend the invitation of esteemed alumni and industry professionals to share their professional experiences. By doing so, we can gain valuable insights into their strategies for staying informed about the latest trends and developments within the industry.

Firstly, a big and sincere thank you to Professor Yvonne for putting together this course. It has been a great journey and I was able to learn a lot from the course. For me I think the time allocated for each assignment or task was abundant, I never felt the rush in doing any of the assignments. The tour was also really valuable for me, as I got to see how an R&D lab looked in reality. I don't think I want anything to be taken out of the course materials. In conclusion, I think this course is really informative and helpful for me in building my professional career in the near future.

Overall, I found the Food Science Seminar course to be very enriching and relevant to my academic and career aspirations. The workload, given the 3 hours per week, felt appropriate for the course. The lectures and activities provided a good balance of theoretical knowledge and practical insights. The industry tours were a major highlight for me. They were incredibly valuable because they allowed me to see firstly how food science concepts are applied in the real world. It was eye-opening to visit production facilities and hear from professionals in the field. These experiences made abstract concepts from the classroom feel much more tangible and gave me a clearer understanding of the potential career paths within the food industry. The Q&A sessions with industry experts were particularly helpful in providing insights that we don’t always get from textbooks, especially in terms of what employers look for and the challenges faced in the industry.

To improve the course, I would suggest adding more interactive elements, like case studies or group projects, to enhance problem-solving skills. A greater focus on emerging trends, such as sustainability in food production, could also be beneficial. Overall, the course was extremely valuable, and I feel more prepared for a career in food science, thanks to the knowledge and experiences I have gained.

It was incredibly helpful in boosting my confidence for interviews and public speaking. I now feel much more prepared to engage in professional conversations and even attend social events where I can practice my English.

If I were to suggest one improvement, it would be to emphasize to students—before tours—that these visits are meant for learning and networking, not for job-seeking.

I found the Food Science Seminar course to be engaging and informative overall. The variety of topics covered kept me interested and allowed me to see how food science impacts many areas of daily life. I particularly appreciated the interactive elements, such as discussions and assignments, which helped reinforce the material. However, I think some of the readings could be simplified or condensed, as some felt a bit overwhelming at times. Additionally, it would be great if there were more opportunities for hands-on experiences or case studies that could tie the concepts directly to real-world applications. Overall, though, it was a valuable learning experience!

The workload felt appropriate for a 3-credit seminar course. The mix of pre-seminar readings, reflective notes, and occasional assignments struck a good balance—it was enough to stay engaged without overwhelming busy schedules. That said, a few readings were quite dense for a single week; curating shorter excerpts or providing guiding questions might help students focus on key takeaways. The industrial tours to Amsterdam Brewery and Toronto Fresh Foods were among the most valuable aspects of this course, offering a firsthand look at real-world food science applications. At Amsterdam Brewery, seeing the intersection of microbiology, quality control, and large-scale fermentation brought textbook concepts to life, while Toronto Fresh Foods highlighted innovations in food safety and sustainable packaging. These experiences not only deepened my understanding of industry practices but also sparked ideas for future career paths. To further enhance the course, I’d recommend adding a post-tour debrief session where students can discuss key takeaways or even incorporating a virtual tour option to broaden access to diverse facilities. Overall, these tours were instrumental in bridging theory and practice—more of this hands-on learning would be incredible!

The professor was extremely accommodating and helpful at every stage throughout the semester, which made learning smooth and engaging. Seeing real professionals working in the field gave us a better understanding of what to expect in our careers.

I really appreciated the interview simulation activity; it felt like a real-life experience and boosted my confidence for future interviews. Another highlight was learning how to write professional letters to HR, whether for a job inquiry or follow-up after an interview. Reading job postings critically and matching skills was also very practical. The workshops from the Career Services department were amazing and full of useful information.

Overall, this course didn’t just stay theoretical but truly prepared us for the industry.

Food Science Seminar course provided an excellent balance of theoretical knowledge and practical industry insights. The weekly class created an engaging platform for discussion, while the guest speakers brought valuable real-world perspectives that enriched our learning experience. I found the workload to be generally appropriate for a 3-hour weekly commitment, though there were occasional peaks when it coincided with assignment deadlines.

The facility tours and virtual site visits were among the most valuable components of the course. Visiting food production facilities and research labs allowed us to see firsthand how classroom concepts are applied in industry settings. These experiences helped bridge the gap between theory and practice in a way that readings alone could not.

Overall, this was a well-designed course that successfully blended academic rigor with practical relevance. With some minor adjustments to workload distribution and the addition of more interactive elements, it could become even more valuable for future students. The combination of knowledgeable instructors, engaging guest speakers, and eye-opening facility visits created a rich learning environment that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in food science.

Thank you.

For a three-hour-per-week course, the workload was suitable—enough to promote learning without being too much. One of the highlights for me was undoubtedly the industrial trips. They helped us relate theory to real-world food industry processes and gave our classroom lessons a practical context.
Adding additional participatory activities or practical demonstrations during class time would be my one suggestion for improvement. Including guest speakers from various food industry sectors may also provide more comprehensive perspectives. All things considered, it was an excellent course that provided exposure to the area as well as information.

What worked well for me were the assignments that connected directly to our future careers, like the site industry tours, The interview preparation, and the professional growth plan. These helped me think seriously about my goals and how to take real steps toward them. I also appreciated the Padlet activities because they made the course feel more interactive and personal, especially when reading classmates’ experiences.

One thing I would love to see improved is the opportunity for more in-person industry tours. The Giraffe Foods visit was incredibly eye-opening, and I feel that getting to see how things work outside the classroom adds so much value. If there were more chances to visit different types of companies like labs, production facilities, or food startups it would give us a broader perspective on the kinds of careers available in the food science field. I would also love to see more guest speakers or panels from the food industry especially former Centennial students because hearing their real experiences made the career paths feel more relatable and achievable.

What stood out to me the most were the industry tours, which brought classroom learning to life by offering a hands-on perspective of how food science is applied in real-world settings. I liked that it was fully online because it was flexible and easy to manage with my other courses and part-time job.

This seminar course offered a manageable and well-structured workload that fit smoothly into my schedule. The balance between assigned readings, reflective writing, and occasional coursework felt purposeful, it kept me thinking without piling on unnecessary pressure. That said, there were moments where the material felt a bit information-heavy. It might help if future courses included more focused reading segments or added brief context before each topic to make it easier to engage with.

The standout experiences for me were definitely the industrial site visits. Visiting Amsterdam Brewery was eye-opening; it was fascinating to watch how microbiological concepts are applied on such a large production scale. The integration of fermentation science, hygiene protocols, and quality checks really helped me visualize how textbook theories function in real-life food systems.

Our trip to Toronto Fresh Foods also left a strong impression. I was particularly drawn to the emphasis on clean-label packaging and how they’re using sustainable materials to reduce waste. Observing these kinds of innovations made me think more critically about the direction of food processing and how I might align my career with sustainability-focused roles in the industry.

Sharing impressions and key observations as a class would add another layer to the learning process. Also, exploring virtual tours of facilities from other regions or countries could expand our exposure even further.

Overall, the practical exposure made this course much more dynamic, and I’d really love to see more of that kind of learning in future seminars.

FST 326 was a well-structured and insightful course that helped connect academic learning with real-world industry practices. The 3-hour weekly structure felt manageable overall, though some weeks were definitely more demanding—especially when assignments from other courses piled up. The company tours and industry speaker sessions were a major highlight for me. They gave us a closer look into how the food industry really works, which made the course more practical and engaging. One thing I would love to see added in the future is more interactive workshops or alumni Q&A sessions. That way, we could get a better sense of career paths and industry expectations directly from people who were once in our shoes.

The Food Science Tech Seminar (FST 326) has truly helped me see the bigger picture of what we’re learning in our program. I really appreciated how the course connected us with real professionals in the food industry—it made the content feel so much more relevant and exciting. It was also helpful to hear different viewpoints during the guest lectures, especially when speakers shared their personal journeys and career tips.

One of the biggest takeaways for me was the emphasis on professional development—learning how to communicate effectively, collaborate in groups, and think critically about issues in the food industry. These are skills I know I’ll carry forward into future jobs and internships.

If I could suggest one improvement, it would be to add more interactive components, like small group breakout discussions or mini case study challenges during class. Sometimes it felt like we were just listening for a long time, and more activities could make the learning even more engaging.

Overall, this course was a valuable and eye-opening experience. Thank you for helping bridge classroom learning with real-world insight—I feel more inspired and prepared for my future in food science!

Overall, I found the course to be engaging and valuable. The mix of theoretical knowledge and practical application through industry tours and assignments was particularly beneficial in bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world experience. I really appreciated the opportunity to engage with peers in discussions, as it helped deepen my understanding of the material.

However, I would suggest providing a bit more time or resources for some of the more complex assignments, as some of them felt a bit rushed in terms of the deadlines. It would also be great to have more opportunities for interactive, hands-on learning in the classroom, as this could better complement the content from lectures.

One thing that worked well was the clear structure of the course, which made it easy to follow along and stay on track. The virtual tours were an excellent addition, and I enjoyed learning directly from industry professionals.

In summary, I think the course is well-designed but could benefit from more hands-on learning opportunities and slightly extended timelines for certain assignments.

The Food Science Seminar course has been a very meaningful and informative experience for me. Throughout the semester, I developed a better understanding of how the food industry operates and the variety of career opportunities available in areas such as quality assurance, food safety, and production. The weekly sessions were well organized, and the workload was manageable, which helped me stay engaged and motivated to learn. I especially appreciated the industry tours because they allowed me to connect classroom knowledge with real-world practices and observe how food safety and quality systems are implemented in professional settings. These experiences also helped me build confidence and expand my professional network.

If I could suggest one improvement, it would be to include more practical demonstrations or interactive workshops where students can actively participate in problem-solving or quality control activities. This would further strengthen our hands-on skills and prepare us for future careers in the food industry. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Yvonne Henry for her dedication, support, and enthusiasm throughout the course. Overall, this seminar has greatly contributed to my professional development and inspired me to pursue a career in food quality and safety.

FST 326 has been one of the best courses I have taken in my program. The industrial tour was a great opportunity that I likely would not have experienced otherwise, and it provided valuable real-world exposure. I also found the practical components extremely useful, especially resume building, LinkedIn optimization, professional email writing, interview preparation, and setting SMART goals. Learning how to conduct job and company research was particularly valuable because it directly connects to future career success.Overall, the course was very well structured and genuinely helpful beyond academics.

I found the industry tours valuable because they gave a real-world perspective of how things work in the food industry, which made the course more practical and interesting. One thing I would like to see added is more interaction with industry professionals, such as live Q&A sessions or guest speakers. I liked how the course was not too heavy but still required consistent effort, which helped me stay on track. The industry visits were very interesting because they showed how things actually work in real production environments, which is something we don’t usually see in class. I also found the interaction with industry professionals useful, as it gave practical insights and a clearer idea of job roles and expectations. One thing that could be improved is giving more detailed instructions or examples for assignments at the beginning, as it can take some time to fully understand what is expected. Overall, the course helped me become more aware, organized, and better prepared for the next steps in my field.

The course was overall well-structured and helped me build a strong foundation in food science concepts, especially when theory was connected to real-world applications like case studies and lab-based examples. I found the hands-on discussions and applied assignments most helpful because they made complex topics easier to understand and remember. The pacing of some modules, however, felt a bit fast at times, especially when multiple assignments were due close together, which made it harder to fully engage with each topic. It would be helpful to include a bit more time for review or shorter check-in activities before major assessments. Overall, the course was valuable and engaging, but slight adjustments in workload distribution and more interactive revision sessions could make it even better for future students
