Definition: The getting ready to write stage.
Personal Experience: When starting my under-grad degree, it was difficult to simply get started on a writing requirement as I spent way too much time attempting to organize my thoughts. I learned that simple or conceptual ideas were more beneficial in this phase than attempting to mentally think through all of the details.
Observation: Children learn the importance of organization in communication as they have to think through their ideas and (depending on grade level) logically align them to support their writing.
Phase includes: Choosing a topic, consideration of the purpose and audience, selecting the genre and organizing ideas.

Definition: Getting ideas on paper.
Personal Experience: I used to write and proof read at the same time and learned that not only does this take a long time but also, can causes me to forget some of the original ideas I had planned to write about.
Personal Experience:
Observation: Children (especially those who fear writing) gain confidence at the conclusion of this phase. The writing is not yet done, but completing this phase provides security and hope that they will be able to complete it.
Phase includes: Focus on content over details, crafting attention getters, and writing the draft.

Definition: Clarifying and refining the draft.
Personal Experience: I often approve complex operational plans for my job and can easily understand the importance of proofreading and getting input / feedback from others as the issues I find are often embarrassing to the creator / writer of the plan.
Observation: While proof reading the draft, the students not only see where ideas might not be fully developed but also, find excitement in adding details and better "painting the picture".
Phase includes: Sharing and discussing drafts with peers, making big changes that might be shared in the discussion.

Definition: Putting the writing into its final form.
Personal Experience: In preparing correspondence that was supposed to accurately describe a given situation for a Congressman, I purposely did not send it upon completion. When I proof-read it one more time a few days later, I found a number of missing details as well as punctuation errors.
Observation: Students may see this stage as redundant after the revising phase, but will easily see its importance as they find additional corrections that need to be made.
Phase includes: Time off after revision phase, proof reading, correcting spelling and grammar errors.

Definition: Sharing the writing with the audience.
Personal Experience: I have written and delivered numerous speeches and briefings and always find satisfaction in watching the audiences connection (for better or worse) with the ideas I am presenting.
Observation: Students may see this as a rewarding stage in which they get to share the result of all of their hard work. Others may view the sharing as overwhelming or have fear of embarrassment which should be mitigated by the teacher before introducing the publishing phase.
Phase includes: Sharing the product in the right form with the right audience.
