Do the right thing has a lot of similarities with the French new wave. As we know, the French new wave movies are more realistic, shot on location, with longer takes, it's less expensive and based on younger characters.

Do the right thing is very realistic. We see the very day life of the characters. We see them working, talking, getting in fights etc... What happens in the every day life of everyone. It felt like a documentary, following the life of Mookie (Spike Lee). We saw many scenes that, before the French new wave, I do not think we would've seen. A lot of small talk, for example the jawing between Mother Sister and Da Mayor. There are also many scenes where the characters don't do much except talking about the heat and how it was going to be a hot day. It does not add too much to the movie except for realism.
This movie was shot on location, which is another sign of it being a French new wave movie.
The takes in "Do the right thing" felt longer than the average. It felt slower, and longer. Which is once again a sign of a French new wave movie.
Do the right thing feels like it did not cost as much money as most movies, they used natural lighting and did not spend on sets. In terms of costumes and props, the movie seemed as though it wasn't expensive as they were simple and easy to make.
Finally, the last aspect that shows that "Do the right thing" is a French new wave movie is that most characters are mostly young. Mookie, Pino and Vito are young adults, that attracts younger audiences. We also see some kids that play on streets.

In conclusion, this movie is definitely influenced by the French new wave as we see many aspects of this in the movie.
