Motivations and Attitudes of outsiders: Their motives for Inupiaq was to Coerce them into marriages at a young age, or coerce those who were widowed. The other motives they has was to assimilate them into living like them and to disconnect them from their culture.

Interactions and relationships with outsiders: - The outsiders wanted to control the people, especially when it came to marriages. The super intendent would appoint people to get married.

Impact it had on Indigenous peoples: - The population dropped, many indigenous people were hungry and the numbers of orphan people were really high.

Reaction/Opinion/Impression

How these indigenous people were treated is very similar to how Inuit were treated by the outsiders, their marriages were arranged and many people died from the diseases that were brought to them.

Summary:

A big sickness known as the Spanish influenza came to many Inupiat villages. Creating the Spanish Flu Epidemic. The disease caused death, starvation leaving a depletion in population and many children were homeless and abandoned.

Motivations and Attitudes of Outsiders:

The Spanish Flu was know in parts of the world but doctors in Nome were unfamiliar to the disease and how to treat it. Nurses tried all the could to comfort Inupiat but many were overwhelmed and felt helpless due to the lack of food and medicine. Serval months later a relief party was sent to Inupiat villages to give flour, tinned milk and coffee to the survivors, and shovels for the ones awaiting for burial. The acting district superintendent was arrogant with his "solutions to repopulate" to have arranged marriages in the Inupiat villages.

Interactions and Relationships:

Outsiders were not in a rush to provide health services with food and medicine and were unfamiliar to prevent the epidemic. The government wanted to solve the drop in the Inupiat population by forcing arranged marriages and having children relocated in orphanages far from their homes and survived loved ones.

Impact on Indigenous People:

The population dropped causing many indigenous people being traumatized, starved, abandoned and relocated. Some were afraid so the moved. All this fear lead many to obey the governments rules and this was a scary way to assimilate.

It is such a sad part of history for indigenous people to be treated that way by outsiders.
