My lecturing style is more mentor and interactive and its easy to go to this technique as I am comfortable with this.

Teaching at both a public and a private institution I see a huge divergence in methods. I also note the student expectations as they come out of public and private schools.

There is an expectation particularly from private schools around performance and what must I do and what must the teacher be doing in order to feel secure that i am PERFORMING.

I realised this whilst teaching that when they are tasked to think for themselves and create outside a clear playbook they are confused.

Im exploring ACT 3.

I enjoy the out the box force the kids to do the leg work and self learning whilst having a support base to guide their critical thinking. Many of thefirst years are expecting an old school teacher standing in front of them with a series of notes and information they can capture so they can ingest and exploit to "perform.

I found the idea of student reflection/ peer evaluation in the student based learning section a great insight. I think if I use it as part of a session it could be a great way to potentially engage the students to reflect critically on what they may have achieved in class. Defiantly will find a way to test this in the upcoming semester !

Constructivism (social constructivism) works best when students can discuss ideas with each other in groups and with the lecturer in class. They construct their learning through social interaction.

I like that Inscape adopts students centred learning as this is more reflective of a studio setting that values independent thought and collaboration. In my travels to Germany and the US this was also the thing that I enjoyed most about the classroom dynamic. Students developed respect for lecturers as lecturers valued student insights. I found this particularly effective in small classrooms

As the article states some benefits of Student Centred Learning:

Increased Enthusiasm

Developing communication skills

Developing relationships

Some ways to implement this:

A flipped classroom

Small groups where some is taught and students elaborate further on topics

Using tech tools like Padlet and trello

I found it interesting that constructivism can be applied to teaching. As a student my lecturers implemented a constructivism teaching method into the lectures, as a result it’s something I’ve tried to implement into my own lectures, but I was not aware there was a term that could be used to describe that teaching method.

This is my biggest challenge. We are recieving students in the later and trying to teach them in the former.

The main principle of student-centered learning is to give students control over both the content of the lesson and the learning method, which results in a shift of focus from teachers to learners.

But although this model has lately been gaining momentum, it isn’t dominating just yet. On the contrary, the traditional instructional method, teacher-centered learning, is still adopted by the striking majority of today’s educators.

I found the constructive classroom videos extremely inspiring and helpful. Most of my classes will be given in a studio space and this idea of a constructive classroom I think works so well. That the teacher is the facilitator but the knowledge is shared knowledge between the student and teacher. Studio work is collaborative and cooperative and allows us as teachers to allow students to become the best designers they can. Studios provide the ideal space for students to think about their learning and to develop life long skills and avoid boredom.

I like how there are different types of teaching approaches. The kind of personality one has, the module they are teaching and the students can help guide you on your pedagogy. I personally like the social constructivism to keep students engaged and connectivism as we are in the digital age.

Student-Centered learning:

I enjoy a busy class where students must discover, debate, and work together. It also assists the shy student who won't talk in front of a group to partake in the discussions. The group work also allows peer review/feedback to happen naturally as the students voice their opinions.

I like that it focuses on setting clear goals which preps students for careers once they complete their studies.
