Kendrick Lamar and other artists have transformed the world of hip hop but also the minds of the youth that grow up with them. Celebrities and artists that come from less fortunate communities often try to use their fame to encourage the next generation and influence growth and inspire a difference in the community so that those residents won't have to live the life the artist had to live in. Artists through out the history of hip hop since its birth in 1982 had the goal of using the medium as a voice for the voiceless. Giving knowledge and trying to help those not within the community understand what the struggles truly were. Kendrick is a prominent artist today that has used his platform countless times to tell his story, not only the story of his community but of a black man in America. Joosten even goes as far as to mention, "Kendrick has been named the 'greatest rapper of all time' on numerous occasions...His lyricism is often inspired by his personal life on the streets of Compton and often contains political and social commentary centered around African American life and culture" Joosten continues to write on Kendrick's drive to inspire young people and be an idol for them to be better. The article highlights one of Kendrick's most influential article called Good Kid, M.A.A.D City where his story telling allows the listener to understand what it was like for the young and ignorant Kendrick to grow up on the streets of Compton and how these experiences have contributed to the man he is today for the good and the bad. Teachers have even used this album towards their students as a way to, "improve their knowledge of these areas and situations." The article gives more examples of Kendrick's legacy and the influence of hip hop as a whole but overall it can not go without saying that the men and women in the game have influenced more minds and people than those may realize.
