Emotional Disturbance Fact Sheet 
  1. While reading the Emotional Disturbance Fact Sheet, I was intrigued and surprised by what I discovered.  Although I am familiar with all of the disorders, I did not realize that Anxiety Disorders fell under the umbrella of Emotional Disturbance. 
  2. Professionally and personally, I have experienced many of the behaviors associated with Emotional Disturbance such as Anxiety, Bipolar, Conduct, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders.  For example, someone who experiences anxiety may have a panic attack in a large crowd or an overwhelming or unexpected situation.  Many times I have heard others offer advice and explain what “These” people should do to “Get-Over” their disorder; however, as a counselor, I believe we must help educate the educational staff on what to expect and how to address challenging behaviors associated with Emotional Disturbance. 
  3. I sincerely believe that students, teachers, parents, and adults who suffer from Emotional Disturbance generally receive negative connotations due to their disorder.  For example, someone can say, “That child has an anxiety problem” or “That child has an emotional disturbance.”  As a society, we place labels on others when many times, we do not understand their struggles.

            My name is Charles (Joe), Perritt.  I received my Bachelors of Science in August 2015 as well as my Masters in Education Administration with a focus on School Administration, from Texas A&M Commerce on December 15, 2018. 

            I have worked for Grand Saline I.S.D. for the past eight years in various capacities.  In the most recent assignment, I worked as the 5th Grade ELAR teacher.  Since completing my Master's Degree, I have been hired as the Student Services Coordinator, in which I will function as the school counselor until I complete the School Counselors Certification Program. 

            The Texas Model defined one of the best descriptions of the duties of a school counselor by stating, “Professional school counselors work with students to meet their developmental needs while being ethically and multi culturally aware practitioners.” (The Texas Model, 2018)
