Nans memories

She was 3 when it started and 9 when it ended .Her mum was pregnant and knocked the Celling to wake us up wt a broom . We would go over the road to my sisters to shelter . I had an army coat on my bed , we would stay there till all clear . I can remember queuing for meat . We were only aloud 2 oz of butter a week per person . We had no sweets , bananas and oranges we not around . They tried to feed us whale meat but it dident catch on.

My nan remembers a plane flying over as we went to my sisters shelter as the aircraft air fighter come across we could see the bullets bouncing off the road he stoped as we passed . I remember fighter planes big air balloons , Germans and our airforce battling in the sky. There were big wagons called smoky Joe’s it would spread smoke so aircraft’s couldn’t see where to bomb.

Gramps memories

I remember a siren went off and you just went to the Anderson shelter. You would wake up to bomb holes and houses gone. Houses blown up along The Crossways. Our potatoes were blown out the ground and we had to fill it back in I remember the war ending and big street parties being held, and people having tea and cake.

My nans brother

He died in the war he was 18.

Geoff Baker 1926-1944. He volunteered to join the army aged 17 his mum dident want him to go. Geoff got blown up throwing a granade that was thrown at him. He was killed in Italy. He fort in France and Italy.
