This is a five act play written by Henrik Ibsen published in 1882 and first preformed in 1883. This play focuses on the actions of Doctor Thomas Stockmann. He was charged with inspecting public baths where prosperity f his town depended. He soon figures out that the town water is contaminated and begins to speak up when he gets declared enemy of the people. Stockmann was a spokesman of Ibsen thought his play gave truthful picture of life that was more important than approbation. (Ashley Starobynski)

Main Characters (AMY)
Dr. Thomas Stockmann, Medical Officer of the Municipal Baths.
Mrs. Stockmann, his wife.
Petra (their daughter) a teacher.

Ejlif & Morten (their sons, aged 13 and 10 respectively).
Peter Stockmann (the Doctor's elder brother), Mayor of the Town and Chief Constable
Setting (AMY)

The play takes place in a coastal town in southern Norway
Relationship with the author's previous play (AMY)
He wrote the play directly after "Ghosts," which got all kinds of nasty criticism in the papers for its talk of taboo subjects like syphilis and assisted suicide.

Knowledge

As I read play reviews and some background information about the play and the author, I briefly learned what the play is about. The story starts from where the protagonist founds out contamination in the water of the town. As he tries to tell the town people about this danger, he becomes the “enemy” of the people. It is interesting that the protagonist gets criticized when he is trying to help the town. I got looking forward of reading the play after I learned about the play.

Responsibility

I made plans of reading the play so that I can finish the play and start my assignment on time. However, as it took longer than I thought, I arranged my plan and divided the play into more parts so that I read more often.

question: Did I plan ahead for class? In retrospect, was there anything I could’ve done before each class that would’ve helped me get more out of each day’s learning opportunity?

I feel like during this first week, I tried to the best of my ability to plan ahead for class. For example, I currently have limited internet access and access to a laptop, therefore, before going to a cafe where I could get internet access, I used cellular data on my phone to check the assignments and write them all down on paper so that all I had to do was type them onto the computer. In retrospect, I think that I could have set a schedule for going to the cafe so that I did not have such irregular access. I think that also, I should have been more prepared for this situation by getting a portable wifi device. (I will be receiving one soon)

This week I read play reviews and background information about my play. This helped me learn more about the play we are reading. In which I learned the story is about a man who I bring to tell his community about dangers in their town like the water. They believe he is lying and think of him as the "enemy of the people". After reading about the play a bit I couldn't wait to starting reading the whole play. It seems very intriguing. So afterwards I made plans to finish the play in increments as in read for about 20-30 minutes. Which worked for a while until I had a lot of work in other classes and forgot to read the play for 2 days. So during the weekend I stay down and caught up on the play and am now almost through the whole thing.

question: · Did I approach the week’s work with a healthy balance of hard work AND humor/joy?

For the second week of the play unit, I feel like I approached this week with a healthy balance of hard work and joy. The hard work was in interpreting some of the lines of the play, because of the fact that the play did not have a narrator, I tried to infer and annotate the play. The joy for this week was in reading the play, because even though the first part was kind of hard to get immersed in, the play got more interesting towards the middle and end. Another big part that I am currently enjoying about this project is planning the tableau vivant. Even though I do not know where I can get all of the materials yet, I am focusing on choosing a scene of the play that I want to depict, as well as how I will express the social issues presented in the play such as ambition and greed.

Responsibility

This week, I finished reading the play. To start my tableau vivant, I selected a few turning points throughout the play and tried to choose the most significant one. I took the photo by using my mom and sister and the place where I am staying. Also, I decided my book for the IDRP. I listed the books that I liked and chose from those books. I also worked on my IO by choosing my global issue and listing focal aspects.

Habit of minds (creating, imagining, and innovating)

For my tableau vivant, I attempted to maximize the use of my equipment that I can use. I tried to visualize the scene in my head and looked for anything that I can use as a feature. I tried to use light, costume, composition, structure, etc.

Knowledge

This week, I learned several grammar rules and the one that was most interesting to me was the hyphen rule. I only used hyphen in the phrase “__-year-old,” but I now know how to use it as a fraction. It was interesting that I can say fractions in a different way.

Collaboration

For the tableau vivant task, our group shouldn’t have the same scene. However, I noticed that we didn’t talk about our scene choice. I think we should talk more about the assignments and ask each other questions if there’s a problem.

Afterwards I began to figure out how I wanted to execute my tableau. I knew I should take a picture rather than paint or draw so I began to search through toys and stuffed animals of my brothers to decide which ones worked best for the given turning point. Once I decided on the stuffed animals and toys I would be using I set them up in their positions and took many different photos from all different angles. I looked through and deleted ones I thought didn't work until I narrowed it down to two and eventually one. Once I had my picture I wrote my rationale and looked through it ensure I had what I needed and finally submitted it.

Can I describe my thinking/understanding of that concept/thing?

This week, I finished my tableau vivant task. Firstly, I learned that when making a poster, or anything cinematographic, the creators do not just put things where it is aesthetically pleasing, but try to send a message or concept through many things. I also learned that this is harder to do than it sounds especially when you are using human props, because the ideas or emotions that I had in mind was impossible to get perfectly from the other people. I now understand that even when you plan for something very well, you have to adjust and adapt to the situation when it does not go to plan.

I though of lack of clean water and how it effected the people in the story but it wasn't one of the given Global Issues. But my article was approved so whatever I choose will be based/linked to that article. This week I also prepared for the Visual Text Analysis by going on google and looking at different posters for the play. And while skimming through the poster I thought of the different techquices, colors, and symbolism in the posters to get a small bit of practice before our real posters were given.

Since I was having a difficulty in finding an article related to them, Ms. Cover gave me examples of key words that I could use to search my articles. The day after, I found an article related to one of my focal aspect and chose it as my IO article.

Habit of minds (thinking flexibly)

I also finished my tableau vivant rationale this week. I read the rubric and noticed that I need an insightful analysis of the content. I carefully read the part of the play again to see if I was missing anything of the characters’ emotions and actions. I tried to think further and kept making questions by wondering why the character did this action, what did he wanted to happen, and what changes if he does that.

Knowledge

Recently, I saw a video from a magazine company that shows women’s image in the actual society. In the video, there is a part when the narrator said, “you hyphenated your name?” I didn’t understand this part before, but after I learned that people can hyphenate their real family name, I was able to understand the context and what the narrator was talking about. Even though I know the basic grammar of English, I noticed that there are still many parts that are unfamiliar with me. This made me passionate in learning these grammars.

This weekend I mainly focused on the visual text analysis. When Ms. Cover gave the posters I began to throughly analysis looking at the different colors, the texts, fonts, the different grounds, and different symbols. I though about how each part connected to the story and what is mean't even how some different parts of the poster where connected to each other. Afterwards I wrote the analysis about the poster. I had a hard time turning it in because I didn't know I even had a turnitin.com account. So I had to reset my password and such just to get in. But once I got it figured out I summited my visual text analysis.

Question: Did i offer any peers support?

A peer of mine from a different class was having difficulty understanding some parts of the Crucible, a play that I already have some context on. Therefore, I went through the more difficult or important moments while video calling her and helped her to grasp the significance of those sections. While doing this, I also benefitted because when I was using reading techniques for the Crucible, I got a lot of ideas to use on my visual text analysis.

Habits of Mind (striving for accuracy)

This week, I worked on my visual text analysis. I read the task sheet and the rubric carefully and started my outline. I edited and organized my outline several times because I had difficulty in linking to the power and explaining it. Every time I made a change, I read the entire paragraph so that it makes sense and doesn't have a grammar mistake. I also read the poster analysis that we did in groups last time to improve and add the stuff that I missed. I consistently read the rubric and checked that I’m writing in the right direction. Even though this task was challenging for me, I enjoyed it as I practiced looking for visual techniques, interpreting those different elements, and connecting them to one same purpose and power.

Attitude

I gave feedback to my friend on her comparative essay. Since I didn’t do my comparative essay yet, I first read the rubric and the main ideas that are required before I read hers. I raised some questions about power and suggested some parts where power can be more indicated. Since she and I have different plays, I tried hard to understand the context and asked her questions about the play. After I gave feedback, I thought to receive feedback from a peer who doesn’t know my play is good because it causes me to write more in detail and coherent so that everyone can understand. As I read hers, I could get an idea of how to write the comparative essay and decided to ask her to give feedback on mine.

It was actually really fun analyzing the different aspects or features of the poster and comparing them to the events or themes presented in the play. I could definitely see the relationship between the tableau vivant assignment and this one, as I feel like if I hadn't done the tableau vivant first, I might not have caught as many details or specific meanings presented in the poster.

This week I focused on my comparative essay. At the beginning of the week I started to think about the a big part of both stories I would like to compare. And I finally thought about comparing how in An Inspector Calls the family is of a high class and doesn't want their secrets exposed because of what is could do to their family and reputations. And compare it to how in Enemy of the People the head of the town doesn't want to expose the poison of the baths to the public because of the media and reputation he and the town would get. Afterwards I began to make sort of a mind map of how I would like my essay to go. And finally I started writing my essay. I have not yet finished but I plan on finishing the essay this weekend.

Knowledge

The grammar 'was and were' was very interesting. I learned to always use singular verbs when I talk in a third-person view; however, this grammar lesson had changed that rule. I think this grammar is really important to know and to use since hypothetical and wishful thinking situations are common. I am glad to learn this grammar so that I don’t mistake on was and were in different places.

I have finished reading my IDRP book! I also finished my comparative essay. The essay was harder to write than I expected, as I had to really grasp some of the concepts of the play and try to see similarities in the foundational messages or themes of the two plays. Since I really enjoy english, it does not take me too long to finish the tasks, and I have fun completing them. I have tried to get in some reading, though it has been hard because a lot of my teachers have given out huge amounts of homework. I started reading Wolf Hall this week, and it took me a while to figure out that when the author used "he" without making it clear which male character she was talking about, it was most likely talking about Thomas Cromwell, the main character. Once I got that down though, the book has been really fun so far, as even though there isn't a lot of action, there's a lot of tension and thinking in a lot of the scenes.

Habits of Mind (questioning and problem posing & listening with understanding and empathy)

For my comparative essay, I tried to keep on asking questions to the main characters to understand their intentions, emotion, and why they did a certain action. In order to know their emotional similarities and differences, I carefully reread the plays and tried to understand the situations in their perspectives. Also, I made a table listing the characteristics of each main character to find more comparisons.

Responsibility

As I stay in my house with my family, I noticed that my concentration had decreased, and my work efficiency got lower than before. I experienced difficulties in finishing my tasks and eventually finished them late. I felt like I’m getting distracted easily, so I think I didn’t do well in achieving my responsibility. From now on, I decided to write daily specific plans to force me to do my work and keep on reminding me to do them.

When i consider the last 8 weeks as a whole, I think that I learned and improved on a lot of skills and techniques. First of all, because the assignments had a word limit of 500 words, I feel like I have learned how to be very concise when writing. In addition, I have never read a play script or analyzed one before, and after this unit, I feel like I have much more insight to how to analyze and read plays. For my teammates, I feel like both of them posted their reflections on time. In addition, I feel like they worked really well with me, and that we created our padlet really well together. I honestly don't think I have any "wonders" because I enjoyed this project so much as it is right now. All the assignments were really fun to write, and the plays were very deep and meaningful as well. Overall, I think that this was one of my favorite units that I've done in english!

Throughout this 8-week lesson, I think I have improved a lot in analyzing plays. By taking several different assignments on one play, it helped me to understand and think the plays in different ways and perspectives. For example, for my tableau vivant, I had to think the situation in Hovstad and Aslaksen’s perspectives, while I tried to think in Thomas’s perspective for my comparative essay. Also, I realized that one play deals with many social issues and conveying certain beliefs throughout. With my group members, we shared ideas when deciding due dates and sending our own IO practices. They always responded friendly. I’m wondering if we are doing the same assignments in IB. I personally enjoyed them because they required all different skills that I never used and challenged me to use them.

Throughout these eight weeks I think I have learned how to better analyze and break down plays. With the various different assignments we completed I began to see the different aspects of the play. How is wasn't just a play about bath contamination that there were other parts of the story just as important and dangerous. For example I thought at the beginning that this play was just about the baths contamination and the man who found out this information. But as we started looking closer at it I saw there were parts that showed the government of the town disregarding the safety of the people to keep their reputations safe. Some wows of my group are before the task had started completely we had created a group chat to be able to communicate with each other. When creating the due dates we Amy checked in before posting them that we all agreed to these dates. Whe
