Jessica Gomez. I liked the discussion of how we tend to take our first exposure to another culture and create a "single story" out of that. I think that could create some great conversation in my Cross-Cultural Psychology Course.

Stereotypes as single stories

I liked the comment that stereotypes may be "true" for a culture but the danger is that they become single stories. I was reminded of stereotypes from a living in a multicultural environment, (i.e., haole kids, like me, are the first ones to raise their hands in class). At times, the "trueness" was so evident that it was funny at times. The danger of course is assuming that's the only story and that it's true of everyone from a certain culture.

Not only was the speaker engaging and made me want to listen to more of her talks, it was a very clear and easy way to show that one's perception is not always the reality. When in doubt, always ask questions.
