We moved to Holland. I didn't speak a word of Dutch and it was very hard for me to make friends. Every week the teacher would make beautiful paper hats for the students who did well during the week. She made me one every week and it helped my confidence in learning Dutch and making friends.

I can still remember when it was announced that I was going to be in Mrs Hemminger's class. I started crying. She was the "meanest" teacher at school and I struggled with studies and was so afraid to fail. She was tough, but I learned more with her than with my previous four years. I excelled with her ability to find my learning style.

In 7th grade, I had a very hard time with being bullied. I decided that I really wanted a pixie style hair cut. I begged my mom for months but she was worried what the kids would say, however, she finally let me do it. Unfortunately, the lady who cut my hair was not one of those "stylist", more of a Super Cuts person (hopefully that comparison makes sense). I looked like a boy. I was a late bloomer and that hair cut made that "boy" look, which my mom was worried about - confirmed. I went to school the next day and came home early because of what everyone called me. At the end of the year and a new better style pixie cut - my mom, my teachers, and the principal decided it would be best if I were to be held back as most of my friends were in the grade behind me. Although the bullying continue for the beginning of the next year because everyone thought I failed with grades - gradually it got better and then eventually no more bullying happened.

My freshman year of HS in SC I had two cousins and my uncle/aunt move in with us as exchange students from Norway. I loved the idea. My father passed away when I was very young, and I would visit my uncles every summer. I thought of this amazing plan to move out to CA for my sophomore year at HS. My mother nearly had a heart attack when I initially asked her.. but then agreed. I move out to CA and stayed with my uncle. The first months were pretty terrible as I had no friends and the CA girl group wasn't too friendly. I made friends with some of my teammates, and after 1 full year. I asked to remain in CA. My mom still says it was one of the hardest decisions she has made in her life, but she could never regret it.

My senior year started out great, I had applied to my dream college (CSULB) and was starting with all my Varsity sports teams - Soccer, Field Hockey, and Lacrosse. Unfortunately, around Christmas I became extremely ill. I was in the ER 6 times in one week, and was never fully admitted. I was having fevers up to 106, hallucinations, and my kidneys were started to fail. Doctors could not diagnose me even after CT Scans, a Spinal Tap, and other testing. I was finally sent home to SC to be with my mother who was a nurse, and was seen by an Epidemiologist who diagnosed me with a rare strain of meningitis. Due to the Spinal Tap I could not stand for more than a few minutes without getting terrible migraines. I lost almost 20 pounds, and was bed written for nearly a month. Although I became healthy and was able to move back to CA to finish my school year. I lost all hope of playing soccer in College. I had a few calls from colleges, and when they heard of my illness.- I lost all prospects. It was not a great time in my life, but I was happy to be healthy.

I was not accepted to CSULB due to missing SAT scores from being sick, so I went to Mesa College after working for a year as I was on my own financially. I took a few classes and a Soccer Class that was appropriate for an elective. The teacher told the Mesa coach about me without me knowing, and he watched me play in our weekly scrimmage. I was asked to join the team as a walk on. It was a great day. I played two years and was Captain my second year. My nickname was Mom as I was older than most on the team. Although I didn't transfer to a four college. I still reminisce on those college soccer days.

After I completed some the two years at Mesa, I was still unsure about my career. I began to work full time again and to find out what made me "tick". I saw a commercial for Kaplan College MA Program. I asked for some information, and after speaking with my mother. I applied. I was accepted and thats when my medical career began. I graduated at the top my of class and while on my preceptorship the Doctor I was working with told me that I would become bored as an MA and should look into the Nursing program. I did, and have now been a licensed nurse since 2014. I have been actively working for the past five years and my titles have ranged from Staff Nurse, to Nurse Manager, and Director of Nursing. I plan to continue my education with a nutrition certificate and become a doctorate level nurse practitioner.
