Knowing how horrible the Nazi occupation was, what I found challenging about NTS is dealing with the emotional weight of the story, especially since we are reading it from Annemarie’s perspective. There is an added layer of vulnerability in her experience that makes it uncomfortable for me as a reader.

If the story included Ellen's point of view, we could understand how the Jews' showed bravery in such difficult times. Ellen stayed with the Johansens and had to leave her parents. That is bravery too, but I would like to know Ellen's emotions/thoughts. She was also brave enough to trust Annemarie and her parents to protect her. Where did this trust come from? Or was it because she had no other choice?

I am not comfortable with how Kirsti does not seem to be scared of the soldiers. Annemarie even thought that Kirsti was going to reveal that Ellen is Jewish.
