         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>He became one of the most important voices in American literature while still in his 20's</li><li>Lived a life filled with paradox</li><li>In 1918, he was unable to pass the military physical because of poor eyesight yet he found a way to get to the front anyway, enlisting as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross</li><li>Hemingway's first book, <em>Three Stories and Ten Poems</em>- published in 1923, and his little book of short stories, appeared the following year</li><li>Hemingway also wrote <em>A Farewell to Arms</em>, a highly acclaimed look back at his experiences during World War I</li><li>July 2, 1961, he was found by his wife, at 61-years- old, with his head almost completely blown awayThe man who had always claimed he was fearless had finally given in to his fears, shooting himself through the temple with his favorite twin-barreled shotgun</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea</li><li>Influence that he has exerted on contemporary style helped him win</li><li>Per Hallström, wrote ten pages about a nomination for Hemingway in 1947</li><li>A Nobel committee member, Hallström thinks that Hemingway is far too thorough, he writes about everything: “How many glasses he empties, every tip that is given, and when he shaves himself he even mentions that he rinses his face afterwards."
