From the video that I have watched just now. I get to know that bajau has their own culture, food and lifestyle. Through this video I get to know that their ways of living is quite sad because they are always fear of pirates who will always snatch whatever they have in the sea. For example, food, and boat. Some even will kill people in order to get what they want.

From this video there are many things that can be concluded about the bajau tribe. Their culture are related to their way of life. As a tribe who lives on the water we can see how it reflects into the way they live their life. From birth to death (especially death) their way of life is very different than ours. Transportation for the bajau are mostly via boats, it can be seen that they are light boats that does not use any technological advances. This may be caused by the pirates which they fear the most or their isolation from the land where they could adopt the technology.

The scariest and most profound part of the video is the elaboration on death and funerals. Leaving their sick on an island to die and burying the dead with its ancestor are clear relations to living on water.

That's All, Byeeeee

In my opinion, Bajau Sea people are very brave and stronger when handling hardships. For example, one of them placed their father on top of a rock because he was not being able to live longer due to his age and condition. As someone who lives in the city, i felt disheartened, angry and shocked by the son’s action but then i discovered that was just one of their cultures. Impressive and unfair at the same time

Bajau people, in other words, the South East Asian Sea Gypsies. They are nomadic sea people, mainly from countries of Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines. From Malaysia, they are living on sea, but mostly on land. Because of pirates, these Bajau sea gypsies have been driven all the way to Cebu, Philippines. There are about 100,000 of them in the world. From the 1960’s, they have been living in households on boats. In these boats in one area, there are about 6-12 families. Their living situations to me is sad, but I’m amazed to learn about them. They are also absolutely amazing at catching fish.

For example, their living style, their food, their living environment, and what their funeral look like. It is quite interesting and kinda sad at the same time, this video shown how bad and poor they are, they even struggle to look for food to survive. And also sometime, they will get attack by pirate, their safety are also at risk. We should do something to help them, to provide their needs in life

In this video, the Bajau people in Cebu are observed on their daily lives, culture and traditions. These people are living in the sea, on boats. They spend most of their lifetimes in sea, catching fishes and seafoods for living. There’s several way of funeral being done by them for death people such as leaving a dying people on a deserted island, make a boat shrine for them and also bury the death body into the earth. I’ve seen few scenes which is absurd during the funeral like digging out a skeleton out and do some offerings.

I am shocked at how savage they are. I think that the video maker should at least respect the dead. When the old lady died, he should minimize the filming as to respect some of the people that were grieving at that time. I dont think that the exposure is needed as there is not so much differences with other cultures funeral. For the bajau people, I think there are so much works that needs to be done. They needs to be taught that babies have soft bones, small lungs and cannot swim, so dont film a video with real baby. Second, dont leave old people to die in an island, thats next level savage. Mercy killing is better. Third, they needs to respect the grave. Well im not an expert in culture but making jokes at graveyard is not a culture for me and if it is, its need to be changed. Fourth, if your daily routine is to hunt fish, the last thing you want to do is destroying the habitat of the fish. By bombing, the coral reefs will get destroyed and the fish will stop coming to that area. In few decades, maybe they need to do something else to get food. I think these tribes needs a lot of exposure but it will be very difficult and the question is, is it worth it?

To see how the Bajau people live and survive in the sea in a small water boat with their tribes amazes me. Their rituals such as leaving the elderly in an island to die without food & water is quite saddening but at least to send them off well to afterlife, they cover them with a built water boat and put a mirror to appreciate their life & beauty. However, the frequent pirate attacks on the sea affect their life even to the point of drowning them. Hopefully, they get better protection from the government/authorities so that they can live peacefully because they only have scarce food resources in the sea. I hope that their lifes are well protected and taken care of as only 100,000 of them are in South East Asia.

I feel sad too when there are people playing around with the late people skull in the graveyard. Education, which has not been reached them yet, plays an important role and it shows that some of them are still not enjoying the basic right as a Malaysian, especially in education.

After watching this video, I learn about how the communities of Bajau sea gypsies live away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The Bajau Laut or sea gypsies live a seaborne lifestyle. They live in small wooden sailing vessels or stilt huts built atop coral reefs and rarely set foot on land.If they do go ashore, it’s usually just to collect fresh drinking water or gather timber to make their boats. They never stay on land for long.
They depend greatly on the sea for their main source of income, just like their forefathers. The Bajau Laut people trade with the locals for their livelihood, using the fish they catch, the coral and shells they pluck from the bottom of the sea, and other sea-based products.Almost everyone from this community is stateless, living a rather carefree and easy lifestyle, not looking far beyond tomorrow.

Spending time on the ocean entertaining themselves, fishing as they are great divers while also facing threats from pirates. Half of the video also shows how they deal with death. At one point, a son left his father on an island alone waiting to die and the tribe faces abit of problem burying dead due to lack of land. Their behavior in solving may look unethical to us, but to them it seems as the norm. Overall the video is a good example on how we treat certain aspects of life(e.g death) differently with other culture.

After watching the video , I’ve learn that we should reevaluate our lives and appreciate what we have . The reason for this is that when tragedy strikes, everything becomes instantaneously prioritized. You realized what matters most and what you care about and anything that is not essential is ignored. Yet when things are going well it can be easy to overlook the blessings in our lives. We can take for granted our health or the relationships we are fortunate enough to have and rather get caught up worrying about our mounting bills or dripping faucet or being stuck in traffic.

Patrick Yong Kim Ong (0328667)
After watching the video, I feel that the people from the movie who is bajau, was an expert people on the sea, they can live easily on the sea and even cook and dry their clothes as normal daily life but on the sea.
I feel that it is not an easy to live on sea and get used to become as part of their life time.
Another hand, I also feel sad. Why? This was because of die poor living lifestyle. The standard of their living lifestyle was very low when compare to the people who live In the urban area. Somewhere, they also do their funeral without any proper method. They even play with the dead people skeleton which show them are lacking of education. These are the some reflection I reflect in this movie

From this documentary, I was surprised that how bajau people live in such a harsh environment as the society is getting advance. I feel that this video have to spread widely so that others can realize how bajau people live in that environment so that they could appreciate with their living condition. Beside, I suppose that government and NGO should work hand in hand not only to improve the environment, but also provide education for them so that they are not left behind by the world

The way of settling dying elder on deserted island is also sad and there is no more extra space to bury the body when they are gone so they cannot pay any respect to them.

The bajau tribe are found mainly in Philipines where they spent their lives living on the sea. Activities like cooking, hunting for food, entertainment and more are done on the sea which makes them unique compared to the other indigenous people. The most surprising fact about them is that they left their parents or other elderly alone on a deserted island when they are about to die.

After watching the video, I have learnt about the daily routine of the Bajau people from Philippines. I learnt to be independent and appreciate what we have in life. These people live in poverty with their lives at stake. They often threaten by the pirates from time to time. Besides that, I was rather upset by their mercilessness -abandoned their beloved ones who are dying to a deserted island. I really hope that these people are able to access to education in the near future and learn to differentiate things wisely.
