Develop a personal 'theory of practice"
Reflective practise enables all key stakeholders in children’s learning to be more effective in building a strong inclusive child-centred practice building on family relationships. Making a difference in a child's and a family’s life - to contribute, to engage, to challenge, to support and to create an inclusive environment that each child will carry with them into their later years in life – ensures a quality early years learning experience. The continuity of care and the needs of the child and family are being met on a daily basis – a secure, safe and responsive environment - assists children to develop their own identity and develop a positive disposition for learning.

Do some professional development and apply these ideas in my classroom.

I strongly believe that as an educator we are not only guiding and developing the children’s, families and communities knowledge we too are continuing to grow and develop our own knowledge bank.
I value the opportunity to attend professional development session which reflect the needs, interest and ideas of the community and setting in which I work.
As a result of professional development I believe it allows for a true inclusive environment to be evident as educators work in partnership with other professionals and agencies to discover new knowledge, ways of modifying environments, ensure inclusion, and celebrating differences.
I believe that through continued learning growth we can ensure our environments reflect the needs of all child and families.
I have observed that once attending a professional development session it invites true reflective practice to occur both in and on action with others to consider how our curriculum can be changed or modified, how we can incorporate and embed partnerships and how we can ensure inclusion.

Seek an expert opinion about an issue I have encountered
I encountered a situation where I had a child who was presenting with very graphic and violent behaviours. I was out of strategies to utilise with the child and their family. I had never been one to go further than my director for help however there was a day where I was stressed about where to go from here and it happened to be the same day that we had Anthony Semann visiting our centre for professional development. I discussed my concerns with him and his advice alone gave me new perspectives on the child and the situation and gave me the confidence to get a psychologist involved and work with the family. It has been 6 weeks since this and the violent behaviours have almost ceased. I am now so confident to seek help from experts when needed and I am so pleased that I didn't leave it with this child having these thoughts and feelings and the other children feeling afraid.

It would not simply be stagnant tables but embracing the child’s interest or what is of interest, in an ongoing cycle of variety and extensions. As literacy is a big part of the preschool curriculum anyway I would still have a reading area and a drawing table available all the time.

Julie Jenkin

My present focus/query in my setting is to find/create an emotional learning programme to support my group of 4-5 year old kindergarten children as they negotiate their world as social beings. Therefore I am throwing it out there, what have you done / seen / tried. How did it work, what do you think about this.....amongst ,my experienced colleagues, in order to tailor make a programme for my group.

As I continue my teaching degree and experience in a variety of educational settings I am becoming more aware of the importance of using student data and feedback to improve my teaching. I think student data can be used in a variety of ways and can highlight what concepts students understand and areas for future teaching. I also believe feedback is vital to my developing teaching practice, I think feedback encourages greater personal reflection, evaluation and fosters a collaborative approach to teaching and learning.

Cabbe Melemung’il (Greetings)

Working within my community and its support of the Wurundjeri land and its people, I have been fortunate enough to attend many PD’s supporting the Indigenous community and the children that I teach.

To have the support and opportunities to be able to apply these to not only my classroom but the service as a whole.

After attending a PD on Koori Inclusive Kindergartens, it sparked my desire to really close the gap within our community and the access that we have available. I then went to a ‘Waking the Woi wurrung language in Early Childhood Education’, this was fantastically presented and also came with a Resource kit, with A4 illustrated word cards and a guide on how to use them and implement them into the program.. Well that was it; right away I knew what I wanted to do and how I was going to do it. Thankfully I have an amazing work team!!

So with further consultation amongst other educators, we held discussions about renaming our bush kinder to the Woi wurrung word Gurrng-gurrng (kookaburra) as it is resembled on our bush kinder logo. We continued discussions on supporting the community and further implementing culture into the curriculum. Again, thankfully I have supportive staff!!

Other PD’s and conferences that I have attended that also supports indigenous inclusion include NATSIAC 2015, which was a wealth of information and relationship building, with plenty of contacts, information and support shared Aust wide..

It is something that I have great passion in and hope to make a difference…

VACL (Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages) – http://www.vaclang.org.au/news.aspx
