Introduction-SOAPS

Wing$ was written and sang by a very well known American rapper, Macklemore. the song takes place in the 1990's when Macklemore was a child and it shows the Nike Air Jordan's as the big thing back then, and him as a kid. He wrote this song to try and tell the younger generation and teens that they don't need to fit into society, they need to spread their wings and be different from society. He tells us we don't need to be like everyone else and that its okay to be yourself. The tone of the song is very upbeat yet sad and catches your attention.

Thesis for Analysis

Macklemore as a teen tells his story with society tries to tell the younger generation and teenagers that they don't need to be consumed by what society says you need. Macklemore uses the appeals of logos, ethos, and pathos in the lyrics and the video to get the message across. In analyzing the lyrics and video, it appears that their use of appeals is effective in convincing his attended audience.

When I read the lyrics there are many examples of logos in them. One of those is when Macklemore says," For a hundred dollars and some change..." we can see that this is how much the Air Jordan's cost. Another example is when he says," We want what we can't have.." When we think of things we want it's usually things we can't afford or just can't have in general. Another example is when Macklemore says," We are what we wear" this is so true because the phrase, judging a book by its cover is just like this phrase we see here.

Lyric Analysis- Ethos

In ethos there are many great examples in the lyrics. One good example is when Macklemore says," It started out, with what I wear to school that first day, like these are what make you cool". We think that it's what we wear that makes us cool, when actually it's who we are. Another example of ethos is when he says," nah, this is what I am, what I wore..." again, it talks about what we wear is what people and ourselves think we are. The final example of this I found was when he says," And i was like momma, this air bubble right here, it's gonna make me fly." this talks about how Nike said the shoes were going to make you "fly" like Michael Jordan, and that's what kids thought.

The lyrics also had amazing examples of pathos. One of those amazing examples is when Macklemore says, " I wanted to be cool, and I wanted to fit in..." He says that he didn't want to be himself, he wanted to stick with society. Another example is when he says," Got to show 'em, so exclusive, this that new..." He explains that he had to show that he was cool wearing the new Air Jordan's. the final example of pathos in the lyrics is when Macklemore says," Are you stupid, don't crease 'em, just leave 'em in that box." He says he wanted to keep the shoes fresh and nice but he bought them to wear them to fit into society but didn't want to ruin them.

In the video, we see that at 0:40 Macklemore walks and is in a basketball gym. This sets the stage for the rest of the video, he is wearing Jordan's, and those were meant for basketball shoes. Another example is at 1:00 when Macklemore as a young teen jumps like Michael Jordan after getting his first pair of Air Jordan's. this shows how much people wanted to be like Jordan, the best player in the world. The final example I saw was at 2:05 older Macklemore is in his younger selves room and there are Jordan posters all over the walls. It shows how popular Jordan was and how everyone loved him.

In the video, we also see many examples of ethos. One example of ethos is at 3:15 when Macklemore as a young teen sees another kid wearing the same shoes as him, this shows that people didn't even notice the shoes he had and that they didn't make him good, they were just shoes. Another example is at 4:15 when people took Jordan's away from Mackelmore as a young teen, Macklemore. This shows how bad people wanted Jordan's and to fit in. The final example I saw was at 5:19 when Macklemore puts on another pair of Jordan's. when he put on these Jordans he says,"... and I see it's just another pair of shoes." See Nike always said," just do it.", kids and teens thought they sold a dream when they just sold society a brand.

In the video, we see that at 0:56 Macklemore as a young teen is starring at the rim of his basketball hoop. We know that this means he feels like he can be like Michael Jordan and he feels like he can be a great basketball player. Another example of pathos is when at 1:19 it shows his classmates' shoes and he is the only one with Jordan's, we see that this means he felt like the best and that he felt different from everyone else because he had new Nike Air Jordan's. finally, another great example is when at 2:15 Macklemore as an adult is reading a book to kids, this shows that he is telling the story about how society was consumed by the Nike Air Jordan's.

The lyrics use many appeals throughout the song talking about how society wants us to wear things and how we want to wear what most of society is wearing. The video used a lot of appeals to confirm that same thing, bringing us back to when Macklemore was young and the new favorite thing was Nike Air Jordan's. We know that Macklemore is effective in getting his point across but we aren't certain if he changed anyone's view. The video shows his point of view as a young teen, which brings the song and his message into a reality. The background of this video helps us know what he is talking about when he says wings, he is talking about the consumption of big-name brand companies and how they brainwash you into thinking they will do something to you. Thus making us want what society wants us to have to be cool and fit in.

Works cited

Songfacts. 2020 Songfacts, LLC. 2020.
