•	The Importance of Repetition by Sharon Mahingo

•	Throughout this Padlet, I will be discussing the concept of repetition. While reading the first chapter of the book Every Song Ever by Ben Ratliff, I will be trying to understand the meaning and importance of repetition as Ratliff explains it. In the chapter, Ratliff breaks down different song and their use of repetition and how those repetitive saying or beats have some underlying meaning that the artist is trying to convey to the listener. Not only does Ratliff explain repetition through the eyes of the artist but he also tells us how the audience and listeners of the music react to the use of such a musical element. I am able to understand more thoroughly how repetition works and how truly important this musical element is not only to the artist but to the listener as well. Repetition has so many different layers and different was of interpreting it through the different songs that it takes time to dissect the music and understand the meaning behind it or as listeners we can just go with the flow of the song and interpret our own meaning to the repetitiveness we hear.

Do you agree with Ratliff’s arguments regarding this musical element? Why or why not?

~ I agree with Ratliff’s arguments regarding the musical element of repletion. Not only was he trying to differentiate repetition and variation, he went into depth in trying to get the reader to understand what he meant by repetition. I agree with his point on how the artist used repetition to emphasize some parts of a song as well as give an underlying meaning when you listen to it.

Examine at least one musical example in Ratliff’s playlist in detail – how does it exemplify this musical concept?

~I listened to Benny Goodman’s “Sing, Sing, Sing” part 1 & 2 from the list given by Ratliff. While listening I do understand what Ratliff was saying when he was trying to dissect and understand repetition. Throughout the performance you hear different sections where different musical instruments play repetitive notes. Then, they move on and play a different repetitive not and while they are doing this they show the crowd going along with the repetition and start dancing to the beat that’s created. As Ratliff was saying in the chapter, the audience in a way takes ownership of the music when the repetition is created and you can see every aspect of repetition as well as the way the listeners react to Benny Goodman’s performance.

Find at least one musical example outside of Ratliff’s playlist and justify its inclusion – how does it exemplify this musical concept?

I choose the Rolling Stones, “Beast of Burden” as another example outside of Ratliff’s playlist to exemplify the music concept of repetition. I believe this song exemplifies repetition because you can hear it at the beginning of the song as the drums start playing their beats and then the guitars come in then, they start playing in a pattern harmoniously together. You can hear this repetitive rhythm throughout the whole song as they lyrics are sang along side them and I believe this exemplifies a part of what Ratcliff was trying to explain in repetition.
