On the surface, one may at first notice the vastness of the sweeping landscape, the vibrance of the grassland. But if one looks more closely, one might notice that – while the grassland may seem like one entity – it is in fact made up of a vast array of grasses and plants, all of which contribute to its lush grandeur. Also, the rich history of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump makes it a place of great local, national and global significance. As a result, it is a protected UNESCO heritage site.

Why did you take a picture of this?

I originally took this picture because I was struck by the many grasses that make up the plains, and how beautiful they are together. It makes me think of the plurality of Canada – many peoples, many stories, all living together to create one large community, and the strength and beauty that comes with diversity. But of equal importance is how this plurality exists in a place with its own ancient history, its own important stories, home to equally diverse Indigenous peoples since time immemorial.

What does this picture tell us of your understanding or beliefs about citizenship/identity today?

As a first-generation Canadian citizen, I have always felt that part of what makes me proud to be a Canadian is its pluralism. How it’s a place where people from all over the world can live together and learn from one another, without giving up the roots that help to foster such diversity. I still feel that way. However, I also believe that we’re not quite there yet. Our country celebrates its diversity, while at the same time struggling with it.

How can this photograph provide opportunities for us to expand our notion of what citizenship/identity is now?

“Central to the vision of the Alberta Social Studies program is the recognition of the diversity of experiences and perspectives and the pluralistic nature of Canadian society.” (Alberta Education, 2005: Program Rationale and Philosophy, Social Studies K-12, p. 1.).As a future teacher, I hope I can teach social studies in a way that can help my students understand and appreciate their unique role in nurturing the health of our pluralistic nation. Each of them has a hand in upholding and celebrating the value of diversity, while also working to end racism and colonization. This will, of course, include helping students to “…understand the diversity of Aboriginal traditions, values and attitudes…” while also understanding “…contemporary challenges and contributions of Aboriginal Peoples in urban, rural, cultural and linguistic settings.” (Alberta Education, 2005: Program Rationale and Philosophy, Social Studies K-12, p. 2.). Part of this is recognizing how each and every culture and community is important to our national identity. I believe we learn this most powerfully when we learn it together, because we all need to help one another understand each other’s perspective.

I love that you brought attention to both the bigger picture of the landscape as well as the individual grasses and plants! The idea of pluralism comes across strong with this photo and you do a great job connecting it to Canada's complex identity. It would be affective to bring this idea to an individual level as well.
