Straight Outta Compton is a movie about a group of teens who come from the city of Compton. Compton is known for its high crime rates, drugs, and gang violence. While they were all struggling to survive and find their place in life, they found their calling together through music, specifically rap. I chose this movie for analysis because it paints a good picture of what African American men are portrayed as and expected to be even in society today.

Analysis: Dr. Dre is seen here mourning the loss of his little brother Tyree who was murdered because of a conflict. This scene resists the single story of men not being able to be vulnerable. In society, men who display their feelings and emotions are often looked down upon. It's seen as a sign of weakness and femininity. This also reveals a limit placed on men by society, because it is looked down on most men feel as if it is unacceptable to let happen.

Analysis: Eazy-E was in the middle of a drug deal gone bad. In the middle of a standoff, they are interrupted by the police who raid the house allowing Eazy-E too escape. It's common when talking about black men to include the hood, drugs, police, and betrayal. This scene includes all of these aspects. Men operate in a sort of "every man for himself" type of world. Throughout the movie, you can see these recurring themes about how life is for a black man in the hood and the effects it has on them.

Single Stories

The movie conforms, resists, and questions many of the single stories about being a man, more specifically black men. For example, the movie conforms to many stereotypes such as gangs, drugs, and the circumstances of black teens. It resists some of the single stories about men by breaking limits placed on males by gender roles. This is evident by the portrayal of unity and emotion between the group not usually found in men throughout society. They are questioned through the lives led by the main characters. For instance, Dr. Dre who struggled to provide for himself, his mother, and his brother.

This movie shows the social, economical, and psychological effects of racism by displaying the racial and interracial relationships, circumstances, and interactions between them. A few examples of these are when N.W.A.'s manager tries to rob them of their money for himself, the unity of the gangs against police brutality, and the black vs. white theme of the movie. These effects of racism all stem from being born underprivileged due to race and subject to discrimination and prejudice being a minority.

Evidence #3: Questioning

AnalysisIn this scene, Dr. Dre's mom is shaming him for not having a "real job" or going to school like she planned for him. This questions single stories about men because it is expected of a man to be able to take care of himself and be the provider of the household for his family. Dr. Dre is being punished however because he is trying to go about it a different way than the average school > 9 to 5 pipeline. This questions the single story of the limits of the male role because it begs the question: do the means of which one goes about how he/she is able to provide matter? Even if it takes more time than the average way and does it make you less of a man simply because it is not an instant method or solution?

He believed Jerry was playing them from the start to steal money off of their talent while the others were too blind to see. The past had a general effect on his views on life, because of a history of white supremacy and degradation Ice Cube approached every white person he encountered with caution and preconceived notions to protect himself.
