This piece is inspired by a joke my mother has heard countless times from her clients: 'What's the difference between a social worker and a Rottweiler? At least with a Rottweiler you get some of your kids back.' I used only black and red for the propaganda series because they're traditionally 'angry' colours and are often used in negative posters to affect the viewer's perspective. It was the first piece I ever made for this project.

This piece is inspired by a real story Karen told me of a child who's mother was insisting the father - a very violent man - was not coming to the house. However the child had drawn their father hiding in their room - in the wardrobe and under the bed - which was their way of telling the social workers that the mum was lying when they weren't able to say it out loud. I used oil pastels to give the illusion that a child had drawn it with crayons.

Anti-Social Worker Propaganda 2

This piece came from an interview with Karen where I asked her how social workers are perceived, to which she replied: "I think people either think social workers are wishy-washy, do-gooding, right-on, left centre of politics, wanting to save the world type people, or they think that they are heartless, ripping children out of families, you know, don’t give a monkey. I think there was a view years ago that was like social workers got a bonus if they took the most children into care in a week. Obviously, that’s not true." So, I wanted to reflect this by having both perspectives on one face. This piece later became part of the propaganda series after a discussion about it with Karen, to which she said that her and her colleagues would often say: "You're damned if you do and damned if you don't." So, I then added this text to the piece.

This is the first piece inspired by the large mirrors in the space I will be using for my project. These pieces help the audience to understand on a more personal level how my mum often feels. For these pieces, the audience are invited to sit in front of the mirrors and look at the pieces, which will be roughly level with their own faces, while they hear the audio, to create a more immersive experience. They use three distinct colour pallets, and there will be broken glass style triangles to match the colours around each face to further create the colour theme.
