The real ruler is actually the shogun who was the supreme military leader, the emperor is the leader he just doesn't have any real power. Next, below the shogun are the daimyo, they are samurai who own land. Then came regular samurai warriors, after them were peasants and artisans. Merchants came last but slowly climbed higher as Japan's economy grew. Peasants actually made up about four-fifths of the population back then.

1. Tokugawa moved Japan's capital to a small fishing village where his base was located and because of that the cities population boomed. By the mid-1700s the city's population was over one million.
2. The culture continued to thrive there, samurai attended cultural dramas where they read tales of ancient warriors and their bravery in battle. They had paintings in their homes of scenes in classical literature.
3. Soon traditional culture had competition in the cities, people started to explore new styles of drama, art, and literature. People started to read realistic fiction, stories about merchants and the hardships of life. They also started to read/write haiku, which is 3-line verse poetry with a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.

When Japan started trading with the Portuguese they brought tobacco, clocks, and firearms. The firearm was the most important item that the Portuguese brought to Japan because of how it affected the fighting traditions of Japanese warriors. When Japan started production of the firearm it forever changed the fighting style of Japan. Some daimyo hired and trained peasants to use muskets to protect them and their land. Many samurai kept to their swords which lead to them losing their lives in battle against musket fire.

At first Christians were welcome in Japan but after dismissing Japanese religion and converting many to christians, Tokugawa banned Christianity out of fear of religious uprisings. Even after Tokugawa died repression of Christians continued and in 1637 an uprising of mostly Christians shook the shogun. He responded with violence, he ruthlessly persecuted them and Europeans were either killed or driven out of Japan. The Japanese were then forced to be faithful to Buddhism and eventually Christianity was eliminated from Japan.

Although Japan did not want European influence in their country they did want their trade. So by 1639 they sealed Japan's borders and issued a closed country policy. Nagasaki was the only port left open to foreign trade, and even then only Dutch and Chinese merchants were allowed to trade there. For over 200 years Japan basically remained closed to Europeans, as well as Japanese were forbidden to leave for fear they would bring back foreign ideas. Japan continued to develop but as a self-sufficient country. Other than being the only port open to foreigners Nagasaki is also known for its historic buildings, beautiful landscape, and delicious food.

The main things Europeans wanted from Japan were gold, silver, and copper, which Japan had plenty of. Once they arrived they discovered luxury goods produced by Japanese craftsmen which soon became desired and was significant part of what was transported back to Europe. Those luxury goods would include kakiemon and lacquer which are types of porcelain.
