The very first atomic bomb was built and tested in Alamogordo, New Mexico, during WW2. They built this under a top secret U.S goverment program known as the Manhattan project. Los Alamos was then approved as the site for the main bomb scientific laboratory on Nov 25, 1942.

On August 6, 1945, during WWII American bombing raids on the Japanese cities, August 9th marked the first use of atomic weapons beyond testing. Over ten thousand people were killed during this time. The following day, the Japanese government issued a statement agreeing to accept the allied surrender terms that had been dictated in the Potsdam Declaration.
