An example to show this could be a theme is on page 73 when laia is told to be a spy. This is defintley not a good thing to do but sheś doing it to save her brother.

They retain a growing friendship that sets them up for the hardest of trials they face in the book, and still keep their beginning goal in mind for the journey to continue further on.

On page 437 Elias assumes he is dead this shows that he has already mentally given up. He sees Laia and asks her if she is also dead asking "Your here too?" and then adding "I thought Scholars had a different afterlife." Even though he has given up and she could have easily left him to die she comes back for him.

On page 438 Laia gives him a choice, to help her get her brother back or die. He thinks 'True freedom-- Body and soul." He has freedom of his body, but not his soul. So he promises to help her even though he is already somewhat free. And keeps his promise.

Here she experiences being tortured  but she's still determined to save her brother and doesn't give up.
On page 120 Laia states, "Only four lashes and I feel as if my skin has been torn open and drenched in salt.  Blood drips down the back of my shirt..For Darin. For Darin. (Tahir 179). this shows that she didn't give up even though she was being tortured and she was experiencing a ton of pain she kept going to save her brother. another example for this theme is when Laia meets up with the rebellion and does not have information but begs them to give her another chance. Tahir says " 'Don't Give up on me,' i say when Mazen shakes his head in disgust. 'Darin doesn't have anyone else. you were close to my parents. think of them-please,'." ( Tahir 147). On Laia's side of the story, motivation is essentially what drives her entire line of action. She constantly keeps hearing Darin in her head. Early on the book when Laia is running away, it is stated, "Then defy the Empire, Laia. I hear Darin's voice. Save me. Find the Resistance...Stop, Laia. No such thing as ghosts." (Tahir 34 & 35). The guidance from Darin is what helps Laia to the Resistance. He is the one who stands by her even when he is far away. 
Another example of this is on Elias's side, and while he doesn't have someone speaking in his head, he does have someone, one person at Blackcliff for him to trust. During the Trial of Courage, he says, "Then she's pulling me close, cradling my head, whispering that I'm alive, that she is alive, that we are both all right, and that she's found me." (Tahir 156). This shows that despite competing to become Emperor, Elias and Helene still look out for each other.
