Over the last 4 months, I have started my fly fishing quest by buying my first rod and reel, investing in flies, and building my over knowledge by inferring to online articles and other fly fishermen. My next step in this project is to continue to build my overall knowledge on the subject and build up my arsenal in gear so I can successfully catch and release a fish. Issues I have encountered while pursuing my project is understanding the type of fly to use. Because they are not natural, they have to be exactly what the fish are feeding on. I can catch twenty fish in one location with natural bait, but once I switch to flies the are turns completely lifeless. One element I have learned intensively during this project is pressure location and water clarity If the area is fished very heavily, the become keen on what is real and what is fake, making it very difficult to catch fish. Water clearly also plays a factor, the cleaner the water, the more difficult it is to catch fish.

On Saturday, August 24th, My fishing buddy, Brevin and I took a fishing trip up to our "honey hole" (cannot disclose location). This was his first week back from an internship in Nevada for Chemical Engineering and with him, he brought me my first ever fly fishing rod that I bought from him and a new found knowledge on river fishing. He unlatch his fly box and gave me my first flies that were nymphs. Moreover, we started are fishing adventure. On our way we saw a bunch of wild animals from big horn sheep, deer, and even a beaver, but eventually we came to our secret spot. We started out throwing natural baits like worms and salmon eggs until we caught around 12 fish. Our confidence was high, but that quickly changed when we put on the flies. When holding the rod in my hand, it felt like a whole different language. I had no idea how to set it up or properly throw it. One of the times I even wrapped my entire coarse of line around my buddies neck. Eventually however, I learned the basic way to throw the fly. For the next 6 hours, we casted and casted and casted. The dread was taking over and our moral was low. It wasn't until our last spot that that I got my first touch of life on a fly. I saw a green little bug accidently fall in the water and in a near instant a timid splash left him disappeared. I threw my fly in that direction and saw the slightest pull in my line. It set the hook and sent a little 4inch trout soaring through the air. As fast as he was on, he was off. That day I left defeated, but eager for more.

On Wednesday, April 4th, I decided to skip school and take a fishing trip down to Salida. We left my friends home at School of mines at 2am running on no sleep before a 3 hour drive throughout the night. Once we reached out destination, we took no hesitation and went
right into fishing. As always, we start started out with natural bait and I ended up catching my first brown trout of my life. Over the next 2 hours, the bites were thin, but were able to pull out 4 fish altogether. With my new found knowledge and supply of flies, I rigged up my flying fishing rod and began casting into the water. Nothing. 7 hours, 2 miles of walking and not a single bite. We could see the fish in the water and watched as the lure sniffed past their nose with no reaction at all. In the end we attained nothing, but lost flies and a hurt ego.

On Saturday, March 14th, the first week of spring break, I took another fishing excursion with my fellow fishing buddies to Frasier. Legend had it that people were catching monsters fish right out of the river near Lake Dillion; nevertheless, we were there to test the theory. Over the past 5 months I had been very occupied with baseball forcing me to astray from fishing. Fortunately, my physician, Dr.Matthew Morgan, was likewise an fervent fishermen and well equated in fly fishing. By the few instances talking to him, I was able to cumulate new techniques and areas to fish. Unlike most trips, I kept my expectations low because I knew the chances of me finally landing a fish on a fly was one in a million. My belief was beginning to become true, until on the near last cast of the day, I saw my indicator go down and a slight tug at the tip of my pole. My heart raced and hands jittered, but sure enough, the fish made it into the net and I finally caught my first fish on the fly.
