“Children need and deserve something better than selecting out pieces of old mathematics. Like clothing passed down to the younger siblings, it never fits comfortably.” (pg. 53)

I agree but unfortunately we're stuck in the old type of thinking what mathematics is and how it should be taught. My students are really enjoying open ended questions and collaborating with others but I feel bad for them as I feel like I'm not preparing them for the next years techer's type of teaching... also I feel like my students math skills (as they aren't expected to do math quickly or aim for correct answers) will be judged and labeled as "not good at math".

Younger siblings still need clothes - we can't send them out into the world naked. Who decides what is old mathematics, that gets trimmed away and forgotten. Euclidean geometry still works...so I don't like the idea of forgetting old mathematics that persist and are still very relevant. Of course, we could explore these concepts in better ways, with new tech, for example. Old concepts get a renovation...not forgotten.

However a mix of old and new can work well together. "One persons junk is another persons treasurer"

However so many students believe that rote learning is the best way that they learn is it guarantees them getting the right answer if they follow the steps, unfortunately and fortunately there are to many kinds of problems and you can't memorize all the steps.
Perhaps it comes down to level of expertise on the educator's behalf. If we have a closet full of math clothing, we can find the most comfortable items for every student.
