Looking at all of the Exploration that Juan Ponce de Leon did I would like to compare this to Marco Polo’s travel of the Silk Road, which happened in the Renaissance period. Gold- Juan Ponce de Leon began his exploring career with Christopher Columbus but his first big exploration on his own was when he traveled to the Caribbean to discover gold for Spain. This is similar to Marco Polo when he wanted to travel the Silk Road with his father and uncle during the renaissance period because they were also looking for more gold and riches that they could bring back to Italy and the rest of Europe through these trade routes that he would make famous. Both of these explorers wanted to find gold and riches that they could bring back to Europe from other continents. Glory- Juan Ponce de Leon sailed down to the Caribbean to look for gold but, also was helping his country of Spain colonize the the “new world”. This differs from Marco Polo because when he went to go explore Asia it was already a colonized and conquered region. Marco Polo was going to Asia for knowledge and trading resources while Juan Ponce was also exploring for resources/gold but he wanted to honor his country of Spain just as much as he wanted to discover gold in this region. These are some similarities and differences between Juan Ponce de Leon and Marco Polo’s explorations.

There are many similarities and differences between the effects of Juan Ponce de Leon’s travels and Marco Polo’s travels across the Silk Road. One of the effects of Ponce de Leon discovering Florida was he found new land for his country of Spain. This contrasts to Marco Polo’s travels across the Silk Road because he was not doing this for any certain country but just for the purpose to go to Asia to get good and trade with the foreign countries to make him rich. Another thing that Ponce de Leon did was governed Florida and Puerto Rico which influenced a lot of Spanish culture on these newly colonized areas. Similarity Marco Polo was also an influence of not only European culture in Asia but then bring some Asian cultural back to Europe. So both of these two influenced a lot of cultural traditions upon the areas they explored. An effect of Ponce de Leon fighting with the Natives in Florida that eventually killed him was that the Natives then disliked the Europeans because they were trying to take their land. However this contrast to Marco Polo’s 24 year journey on the Silk Road because he was welcomed into Asia when he went and explored and even was a close advisor to the Mongolians. Unlike Ponce de Leon who was not welcome in his newly explored land. These are some of the effects that Marco Polo and Juan Ponce de Leon sharded and contrasted during their travels to foreign lands.

Both men kept there exploring very well documented for others to gain knowledge from which helped the people of Europe expand into the Carribean and begin more trade with Asia.
Primary Source 3 (Juan Ponce de Leon)
https://www.missionsanluis.org/_images/European_age_of_exploration4.jpg
Primary Source 4 (Marco Polo)
https://exploration.marinersmuseum.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2017/08/Polo-Map.png
DIFFERENT- The difference between these two primary sources is how the maps were gone about being created Juan Ponce de Leon’s map was really just a guess what they thought the area to the North of Cuba was like but it ended up being a pretty accurate guess because they knew the shape of Florida because they sailed around the coast of Florida for quite some time when colonizing the are and searching for gold. While Marco Polo’s exploration map wasn’t a guess because they already knew the shape of Asia just because there was so much exploration over in that area of the world so it was also a pretty accurate map. That would be how these two important primary sources differ from each other.

Left Behind- Juan Ponce de Leon left Spain in 1492 to sail with Columbus but then became a governor of Hispaniola area. Ponce de Leon and the rest of his crew left a lot with that area and the people there. Some of the main things were Christianity and the language of Spanish. This impacted this area in many ways with the main things being that the Spanish somewhat forced their language and Christianity upon the natives of the Caribbean region. The Spanish did this because there goal was to conquer the region and its people so in there eyes the best way to do that is to just force there customs upon the natives. That affected this region very largely because Christianity and Spanish are the main religion and language spoken in the Caribbean and Latin America today. So without the Spanish coming to the Caribbean in search of resources and gold the Latin American cultural would not be shaped the way it is today because they wouldn’t speak Spanish and have Christianity as their main religion if Spain did not conquer the area because England or Portugal would have took it over instead because they were all trying to gain land in the "new world". Took- The main thing that was collected from Juan Ponce de Leon’s exploration of the Caribbean region was just the information of the discovered land in the and the places he discovered like Puerto Rico and Florida. This impacted Spain because they were not really aware what land was in Caribbean/Latin American/North America area they knew about Hispaniola (the area Columbus discovered) but other than that it wasn’t very clear what was in that region. So when Ponce de Leon found Florida and Puerto Rico it was a very big deal because they didn’t know that these islands existed before and knowing that they were there opened a lot of opportunities and resources. This relates to today because the regions of Florida and Puerto Rico are two territories that still have a lot of Spanish culture in them and that is because of the information and exploration of that land for Ponce de Leon that lead to land taking over this area showing how important Juan Ponce de Leon’s exploration information proved to be for the country of Spain.

There where many effects of the exploration period that happened because of exploration and colonization. First explorers like Ponce de Leon gained new knowledge about lands that they at first had no idea even existed and then had all this information and resources after. Like when Ponce de Leon found Puerto Rico and Florida and gave the information of newly found land back to Spain and they eventually started growing and harvesting resources like tobacco and sugarcane, which they bring back to Europe. They then spread this information back to there countries and its spread across most of Europe after. This is very similar to the Renaissance period because they knew about Asia existing but they never really knew much about either. That is until trade began on the Silk Road and resources and new information about Asia spread to Europe after traders went there. This resulted in them learning a lot about the lands like Florida and Puerto Rico, learning about the natives of these Caribbean regions ,resources that were bring back Europe like tobacco and sugarcane and giving the language of Spanish to the native people of the Caribbean. Another effect the exploration era had was that the natives got removed from their land so that the Europeans could colonize it and claim it as their own land. Like when Ponce de Leon was trying to conquer Florida and there were a bunch of native people there they had to fight with for the land which eventually ended up killing him. After most explorers realized that there was other people in there newly discovered they would either try and convert them to all their believes or drive them out of their own land. This contrasts from the Renaissance period because when the Silk Road opened and they began trade and travel into Asia but the Europeans didn’t end up conquering Asia because most didn’t try and if they did they usually failed because of the strength of most of the countries like China, Japan, and Mongolia. A finale effect of the exploration era was new trade routes and ways of travel were created during this period. There are many examples of different trade routes being created during this period with the most prominent ones being the Colombian Exchange and Triangular Trade. Which is very similar to the Renaissance period with the main trade route being created there was the Silk Road the trade route that went all the way from Europe to the coast of China. That was one of the most important routes of trade during the renaissance period. This was some comparing and contrasting of the exploration era and the renaissance period two very important time periods when it comes to exploration, discovery, and knowledge.
