Lime: Refusal of the Call - Comfort Zone by Youth Ambassadors Program CIED at Georgetown

Try something that takes you out of your comfort zone and talk about it in a short Padlet post. This could be cooking a new recipe, practicing Spanish on a zoom call with a YA partner. Of course, it must be safe and follow local public health guidelines. This is an opportunity to get creative!

Something that I'm doing right now that's pushing me out of my comfort zone is taking a course in Data Science and R Programming. I'm somewhat new to coding, and I find this program to be... challenging. We have to collect our data and then use R code to create plots that easily and clearly display the data. Then, we have to present our plots along with a separate written report in a one-minute long lightning talk (My final presentation is on Friday, so wish me luck! 🤞). Even though this class has been difficult, I've learned so much about myself over the last few weeks, and have been stretched to a new capacity that I never thought was possible.

Ever since I was small I have been involved in charity works with my parents and church. During this Covid 19 period has been no different, however I found myself very hesitant in volunteering to pack the hampers and doing deliveries because of the risk of getting the virus. This has stopped me from volunteering many times. Last week I made up my mind that I would focus on the happiness it brings me to help others and have been trying to conquer that fear. Focusing on the fact that if I am careful and take precautions I would be safe.

One way I can step out of my comfort zone today is by going for a long walk in the evening. My mom would always urge me to go for walks but for some reason I feel sometimes people are watching me and are judging me just for walking XD. Ever since I was younger I was never a fan of exercising out in public unless it was for my basketball team. It always felt as if all eyes were on me. Even till this day I exercise indoors, so this is a real challenge for me. The strange thing is that I don't have a problem with public speaking or anything like that, but, to me exercising is different. My goal for this week is to go for more walks and eventually I will work my way up to exercising in public.

I'm a very introverted person by nature. I feel safe whenever I am at home or in my room. I tend to keep my thoughts to myself and so most times my parents catch me speaking to myself. I know that people say that's the 1st stage of madness but I promise I'm sane. This activity today helped me get out my comfort zone because I had to speak out my fears to people I've never met and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be since we had similar fears. I even found myself giving good advice. Something I can do today to step outside my comfort zone is to talk to my parents more because I don't really speak to them about my thoughts or opinions or things I experience. I can also go outside more and look at the plants since i tend to spend a lot of time inside.

So i tend to play things safe or stick in the shadows but over the Covid -19 pandemic, I've learned that stepping out of my comfort zone actually yields incredible results such as opportunities that may not have presented themselves if I didn't. So now I am determined to speak up , to do my best at whatever I'm doing even if I'm new or even uncomfortable with a situation. I've found the small groups to be a way of facing my fears of speech by speaking on topics I may be apprehensive to speak on .

There are many different times I can think of, under different conditions where I have tried things that have put me out of my comfort zone. It is such a strange thing, once you overcome one struggle, there is always something else that pushes that new boundary, but it always comes with a sense of self fulfilment once completed. One time I pushed myself out of my comfort zone this week was actually through a relatively small encounter, but I think it is those small situations that help set you up to go for the big experiences. This week, I went with my brother to an area in our mall where he joins the chess club here and they practice chess against each other. I was tired of staying in the house all day and so asked him if I could tag along, but I had no intention to play. Although I know the rules of chess, I was pretty sure I would be a flop and so I decided that I would just watch everyone and enjoy being outside (I had also brought my phone and was pretty content to just relax and watch a show I am following if I ever got bored). But was I in for a surprise! They needed an even number of persons so that everyone would be able to play at a given point but that was not the case, I was then encouraged to join in. Even though I would have preferred to stay away from that board, I decided that there was no harm in trying, so, I went for it! I lost both times I played but it was very interesting to learn about the different strategies used and it was cool to get more out of the outing than I planned. And at then end, as usual, it felt great to push a boundary.

Today, to push me out of my comfort zone, I can be more expressive. Most times, I sacrifice my feelings for the sake of others, giving that I don't stand up for my opinion if it differs from somebody else. Or I wouldn't say how I feel because I wouldn't want to offend somebody. However, today, despite being worried that I would offend someone, I still spoke up for how I felt. It was a situation that was hurting me for some time, and I would always downplay how I felt about it whenever the topic came up. After doing so, I felt a lot better, and the person even understood how I felt, and not only did they promise to stop doing it, they did. From this, I learned to speak up when something's bothering me, and not overthink about how the person may react. Yes, some may get angry, but it may also end with them understanding my emotions.
