As we reach the end of another successful school year, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on what has been a fantastic Summer Term and to thank everyone who has played a part in making Blackness Primary School such a special place to learn and grow. This year has been filled with many achievements, successes and memorable experiences, with a small selection from term 4 available throughout the newsletter. None of this would have been possible without the dedication, commitment and hard work of our entire school community…

Firstly, I would like to thank our leadership team, teaching staff and support staff for their commitment to our pupils. Every day they go above and beyond to provide the highest quality learning experiences, care and support for our children. Their passion, professionalism and determination to continually improve our school is truly remarkable.

I would also like to extend my thanks to Friends of Blackness for their continued support throughout the year. Their commitment to our school and willingness to work alongside us helps strengthen the positive partnerships that are so important to our success.

To all of our parents and carers, thank you for your ongoing support and for working in partnership with us. Together, we continue to ensure that Blackness is a school of excellence where children are supported to achieve their full potential. The positive relationships between home and school are one of our greatest strengths and we are incredibly grateful for your trust and encouragement.

Most importantly, I would like to congratulate our wonderful pupils. They are at the heart of everything we do and continue to make us proud every day. Their enthusiasm, resilience, kindness and dedication to their learning have been evident throughout the year. They are a credit to themselves, their families and our school.

To our Primary 7 pupils, as you prepare to move on to the next stage of your educational journey, I would like to wish you every success, happiness and fulfilment in the years ahead. You will be greatly missed by everyone at Blackness. Over the past seven years, you have grown into confident, responsible and caring pupils who have made a lasting contribution to our school community. You have been excellent role models for our younger pupils and have embodied the values that make Blackness such a special place. We are incredibly proud of all that you have achieved and have no doubt that you will continue to accomplish great things in the future.

As one chapter closes, another begins. In August, we are delighted to welcome our new Primary 1 pupils and their families to Blackness. We look forward to supporting them as they begin their own journey with us. We know that our new Primary 1s will quickly become valued members of the Blackness family, creating their own memories, achievements and successes over the next seven years.

This year has also been one of significant improvement and achievement. I am delighted that we have successfully met our attendance stretch aim, as well as our overall literacy and numeracy stretch aims. We have also continued to strengthen our inclusive practice and learning environments, ensuring that every child feels valued, supported and able to succeed. Staff have engaged in professional learning focused on pedagogy, including differentiation and the development of metaskills, helping us further enhance learning and teaching across the school. We look forward to sharing our new School Improvement Plan with you in August as we continue our journey of growth and excellence.

I wish all our pupils, families and staff a happy, safe and restful summer break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in August for another exciting year ahead.

Miss Taylor
Head Teacher

She brought along lots of interactive activities, including tasting different fruits and smelling a variety of spices and fruits. We also had the opportunity to touch and feel different textures while learning many amazing facts about how our senses work.

It was a truly wonderful workshop that everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The children had a fantastic time, and even Mrs Thomson learned something new!

A huge thank you to Lisa for sharing her time, expertise and enthusiasm with Primary 2. We are very grateful for such a memorable learning experience.

During this term, P5a used the Meta Skills of communicating, leading and creating while demonstrating their understanding of their class novel, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They enjoyed writing and performing skits based on the chapters within the book. They also learned various shading techniques when using oil pastels to create the book’s famous lantern peeking through their wardrobe book reviews.

During this term, we have studied varied aspects of the sciences; Space, Renewable resources, Scientific experiments, Biomes / Habitats and Endangered animals. The class embarked on a journey to the Botanical Gardens to examine plants in varied biomes. The class learned the importance of light within the photosynthesis process.

The class has also been learning how to include persuasive techniques within their writing. We all agree that the using a growth mindset and The Power of Yet phrase, is a helpful strategy for climbing out of the pit of discouragement. We believe that promoting an end to cyberbullying and recognising how to keep safe online is an important message for kids to know. We have enjoyed our recent cricket gym sessions and have focused on improving our skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

P5a, I am very proud of your hard work and determination to achieve in all areas of the curriculum this year. It is truly wonderful to watch you strengthen your presentation skills! Wishing you a lovely holiday and an amazing transition to P6!

With gratitude,

Mrs Courtney McConnell

The children in P2a have been learning all about the life cycle of a chicken. We were extremely fortunate to welcome Ritchie (Kit H’s dad) into class with their chicks so he could tell us all about them. He kindly allowed everyone to hold the chicks and explained what they need to stay safe, healthy and well cared for.

Ritchie told us about the incubator he used when the chicks were still eggs and explained how the chicks now snuggle under a warm plate which mimics their mum. We also saw photographs of the hens they own and used a special light to look inside eggs to see whether there might be a chick growing inside.

It was a wonderful experience for all of the children. Kit H and Sylvie were experts too, and we learned so much from them both.

We visited Sook Kitchen where we discussed how the chef sourced produce. Sharyn showed us around the kitchen, and we tasted some of the amazing healthy treats on offer. Delicious!

This is such a busy time of year, and this term has been no exception for Primary 6a. We started the term with bikeability. This allows the children to progress from whatever level they are in biking, from complete beginners to confident cyclists. Bikeability had a big impact on the class with many children learning to ride their bike for the first time and others learning to ride their bike confidently outside the school grounds. This culminated in a very long bicycle ride for most of the class, down to the V & A museum and back up through Magdalen Green - a fantastic achievement. Later this term the class had the opportunity to learn some life skills from medical students as part of the Dr. Me Workshop, and what to do when they have a cut or graze, or even a cold. We have also had a creative writing workshop from local author, Anna Stewart and two music workshops from Fischy music, celebrating Scotland's music. On top of all of this we have had Sports Day, a whole school trip and presented the Primary 6 gathering - a very busy time indeed!

Most importantly the children took part in buddy training with Mr Ferrier and took over as buddies from the P7s earlier this month. They have proved themselves to be very responsible members of the school community willing to give up their own time to support the younger pupils which is exactly what we hope our senior pupils will do. Primary 6a you have shown you are more than ready for the responsibilities that go along with Primary 7 which you will be before you know it - very well done indeed, we are very proud of you.

What a term to finish off our P7 year!

It has been non-stop with activities and events in the classroom and series of trips out and about. P7 have been hard at work finishing off assessments and learning before they transition onto their high schools. We have had events at local high schools allowing lots of new relationships to be built.

We have had visitors in to teach us the importance of activism and social justice, medical students educating us on services to use when we are unwell and doctors who volunteered in Nepal and met Freddie Flintoff!

We have made bread dough, visited the V&A (again), where some of our Trashion Show pictures were placed in the Catwalk exhibition, written and performed original songs based around our favourite foods, participated in another House Afternoon and Sports day and visited Active Kids in a whole school trip. We also were let loose in Craigtoun Park for our P7 Leavers Trip and enjoyed a buffet from Clarks Bakery.

In class we celebrated David Attenborough's 100th birthday and enjoyed working with perspective art, taking inspirating from Van Gogh with our bedroom sketches and the impact of colour. Of course, we have linked a lot of our learning to the World Cup and Scotland!

Finally, as we prepare to say goodbye to Blackness Primary School, we wrote letters and poems for our future P1s to help them feel welcome and ready to join after the Summer.

A wonderful last term to celebrate a wonderful group of children - still so much to come: a disco, shirt signing, Leavers Gathering and our final morning at School!

Congratulations to Thistle House, who after a closely fought competition, won with the highest number of points for this session! Throughout the year the lead swung back and forth with three different houses earning termly rewards this year. To celebrate their success a Picnic in the Park was held Wednesday 24th June at Victoria (Balgay) Park. The sun shone and the pupils across stages enjoyed playing on the equipment and ball games. It's lovely to see the positive relationships that have been built between children of different ages and interests!

The choir practised correct breathing techniques, learned to sing in cannon and learned to identify phrases in a piece of music. Their performance was beautiful, professional and well polished. Well done, performing to a very large audience isn't an easy task and yet our choir did so with composure.
