My mom recommended this book to mom after reading it in previous years. It is about hurricane Katrina and its horrific lasting effects on New Orleans. I know very little about this topic and I am excited to get a personal perspective from people who were living there during the storm. This book was a National Bestseller which makes me more inclined to read it and a higher chance that I will enjoy it. This book will be around the same light read from my last book that was a memoir but will be addressing an event rather than somebody's life.

This quote provides a great foreshadow for the upcoming events that will unfold including a massive hurricane. Author Dave Eggers provides a great flow of descriptions and foreshadows in order to draw the reader in. Even though the book is nonfiction, it almost feels as if it is a fiction story that the author is creating with vivid descriptions and emotions. The authors syntax really shows up in this passage when he abruptly puts a long sentences alongside a quick short sentence. This just exemplifies events that are soon to come and jump out at the audience.

"But in the U.S., it wasn't just the prosperity- because New Orleans was not uniformly prosperous, to be sure- there was a sense that everything could be replaced, and on a whim" (48).

In this passage of the book, Zeitoun is comparing the difference between his experience of childhood life in Syria and his children's childhood in New Orleans. He is trying to inscribe certain values that he grew up with to his children but it does not seem to be working. He talks about how people take things for granted and seem to think that everything is replaceable. Again, the author seems to be hinting at something that will soon appear in the future. In this case, this value will come back to haunt the people of New Orleans in the storm to arrive.

Not only was this hurricane devasting to the community, but oddly gave Zeitoun a sense of calmness and happiness while sitting on the roof of his flooded home. He had been inclined to stay behind while his family fled inland. He used his canoe to float over the water and actually rescue many people from their homes with the help of his neighbor. This gave his fulfillment to his decision and the days that would come about.
