The cross is biblically associated with redemption. David throughout the novel is described as a self-centered man. When he moves to Salem and through continues interaction with animals, a seed of sympathy is sown into David.

David witnesses how the sheep he initially said "don't belong to themselves" are tied up and the reader realizes that David truly sympathizes with them.
David is curious and "that a man as selfish as him should be offering himself to service dead dogs" at the animal centre.

Furthermore, "he saves the honour of corpses because there is no one else stupid enough to do it". Finally, David transitions from being self-centered (Lucifer) to attaining grace through the compassion he reveals towards animals. We see him sacrifice Driepoot, symbolizing hope, redemption and dying of self.

Initially, David can be regarded as an animal due his predatory nature towards women, "what should a predator expect when he is intrudes into the vixen's nest, into the home of her cubs."

David is portrayed as a character who crosses generational and departmental boundaries by engaging in sexual realizations with Melanie, in order to get his "prey" to fulfill his sexual desires.

However, a transition occurs when David reveals his dog-like qualities are used positively. David apologizes to Issac by getting down on his knees as if he were a dog for a master, as a sign of remorse.

Additionally, David has sexual relations with Bev Shaw, whom he does not find attractive "without passion but without distaste either. So that in the end Bev Shaw can be pleased with herself". David chooses to put the needs of another before his own, by partaking in a sexual activity that he may not have desired. Thus, doing a good deed.

Following the complaint laid against him by Melanie Issacs, David Lurie has to appear before a committee that has to judge and punish his actions via recommendations. Due to his relentless pride, he is forced to resign. His resignation, together with the media coverage of the whole ordeal and it falling on the Rape Awareness Week led by Women Against Rape (WAR), it proves to not only be embarrassing for him, but brought shame and disgrace to his name. Justice and judgement is thus an appropriate symbol as it highlights his disgrace from which he will have to rise above.

QUOTE:

"YOUR DAYS ARE OVER, CASANOVA."

Even though David Lurie's move from Cape Town to Salem may show a kind of fall (a fall from urban to rural), it is also the beginning of David Lurie's path to some form of grace. It becomes some form of retreat for him and and his mind offering him an opportunity to work on his opera and to make a meaningful reconnection with his only daughter Lucy. Further more, his moral standing and attitudes regarding animals and animal animal treatment are challenged and he develops some kind of compassion and kindness through them

QUOTE:

"I don't mind Grahamstown. At least I am out of the way of temptation. Besides, I don't live in Grahamstown. I live on a farm with my daughter."
