David is my favorite character because he is the one that stands out from the other. When Shay was trying to describe David to Tally, the only thing that she could say is that “He’s… different”. David is a rebel as we can see with his tough leather jacket, but not like Tally and Shay. David was brought into this world as an enemy of the system. He doesn’t rebel from his city since his city is the smoke, he doesn’t rebel from his parents because they where also against the system. David is the rebel facing the larger system and its especially true after the special circumstances destroys his town and steals his family. All these facts make him different in my mind and this why he is my favorite character.

1^st theme

Society and class

In the world of uglies, the population is divided in two classes, those who had the surgery and are pretty and those who have not (yet). The city even has different parts for each type. There is Uglyville for the uglies and New pretty town for the pretties. It is pretty straight forward. And let’s not forget about Crumblyville. It can be hard for people of the different classes to interact, so hard that Peris who is pretty, can't even be friend with ugly Tally. “Even when she and Peris used to spy on them from the shadows, giggling at all the stupid things the pretties said and did, they couldn't resist staring. There was something magic in their large and perfect eyes, something that made you want to pay attention to whatever they said, to protect them from any danger, to make them happy. They were so... pretty.” This shows that the people on the bottom (uglies) look up to and want to please the people on the top (pretties).

2^nd theme

Betrayal

This is one of the themes that I feel slips under everyone’s attention. Tally’s lies are part of her betrayal, what I mean by that is that she’s lying to people like her friends and Dr. cable who expect the truth from her. “I can’t help you,” Tally said. “I made a promise.” This quote tells me two things for a betrayal: (1) you need to have loyalty to someone else and then (2) you need to go against that loyalty. Whether Tally betrays her friends for her own desires or betrays her own desires to save her friends, this kind of betrayal help’s us distinguish what she cares about.

First conflict :

Man vs Self is one of a main conflict in the novel. Tally is one of the principal character in the book and she doesn’t love herself. At the beginning of the book, she’s always fighting with herself. « Laughter and music skipped across the water like rocks thrown with just the right spin, their edges just as sharp against Tally’s nerves. » (p.4) Shay, her friend, kept telling her that she’s not ugly and the society try to tell Tally that she’s ugly. Younger, they are brainwashing them to believe that they are ugly, but also David try to tell to Tally that she’s perfect like this and she’s not ugly. With all the support of her friends, she will find a way to find herself and lived a happy life.

Second conflict :

Man vs Society would be the second conflict. Now, Tally understood the operation of the specials circumstances. The operation place a lesion in your brain to control the people think and act. « Shay splashed a handful of water at her. You don’t believe all that crap, do you-that
there’s only one way to look, and everyone’s programmed to agree on it? » It’s
also Man vs Society, because Tally and David went against specials
circumstances to save captured people, in this operation and they started to
say rumors in the city, so they would have more power on them.

For me, the antagonists in the book are Dr. Cable and the Special Circumstances. I found this both, because everything bad happens for Tally, is probably Dr. Cable’s doing. For example : when Tally was infiltrating the Smoke, when she got trailing to the Smoke, etc. Dr. Cable was in charge of the operation, becoming a pretty. In other words, Dr. Cable maybe helped Tally to go in the Smoke and started a new life, with a new world infront of her, but at the end, Dr. Cable destroy the Smoke. All this operation to helped people becoming pretty, to make them happier, was just a lie and Dr. Cable destroy all this. That’s why I think that she’s one of the antagonist, and the Special Circumstances are also, because Dr. Cable was a part of them, so this was also their fault.

Differences between Tally and Shay.

Tally and shay are in my mind the characters that are the most similar. They both where born the same day which is kind of weird. They are both adventurous, for example when they met in New Pretty town trying to sneak in. One of the only differences between them which led to a fight is the fact that shay wanted to escape but tally wanted to become pretty. Tally kind of followed shay’s footsteps for a large part of the book.

This novel demonstrates several life experiences that bring reflexions to our questions. I recommend this novel to my peers, because the conflicts represented in the story demonstrates the reality of our society. I think all teens should read this novel, because life’s morals that are represented int the book will help better understand life for teens. For example : the first conflict that I found previously, Man vs Society, show that everyone think of the others and don’t think of themself. If the society think of a way, the teens are always following them, so they believe in everything, they are influenced by their society. In the book, Tally thinks that she’s ugly and she won’t become a pretty. She think like that, because the society tell her that she was ugly, but at the end she’s not. Short, everyone think of the others, but they forget themselves. That’s why I suggest the novel to my peers, because it’s like a life lesson and evry teens should read the book.

After David takes Tally to his parents, they explained to Tally that the New Pretty Town doesn’t make people happy, it changes the brain to be happy and lived in peace. Tally just realized that everyone in the New Pretty Town had a modified brain. From this time, Tally felt betrayed by Dr. Cable and the special circumstances. She toughts that becoming pretty and live in this town was a privilege, but no longer.

A few days after, Tally and David went back to the Smoke and tell evryone the bad news. Everyone knew that the Pretty town was the perfect town to lives, everyone were happy, but they will never have believed that the operation was a lie. All the actions and toughts of Dr. Cable were lies. So, the Smoke all regroup together and go to the Pretty town to put down the special circumstances. Few hours later, they saw on the top of the operation building, Shay and Dr. Cable. They ran very fast and go on the 75 floor, where the operation was. Shay was slipping on a bed and Dr. Cable was on the other side of the door with to guards. David takes the two guards and put them down, after, Tally and two boys went in the cage and save Shay. The boys take Shay with them and went down of the building. Tally and David knock-out Dr. Cable and sneak out of the town will all the others. Arriving to the Smoke, they hang Dr. Cable on a chair and just quit the Smoke with hoverboards. The Special circumstances get to the Smoke and destroy it, but they didn’t relised that they have killed Dr. Cable.

For me, my least favourite character in the novel, is Tally. Tally is a girl who wants to become a pettry. She wants to change and be in another world, the Pretty town. The main reason why I don,t like this character, it’s because she thinks only of others and doesn’t trust herself. She thinks the world is different and she too, so she doesn’t want to be judged, she’s afraid to show who she is. For example, when she met for the first time Shay, in the waiting room, she wasn’t feeling good, because she was seeing someone different, so she thought she was worth next to Shay. The two girls don’t have the same values, that’s why one wants to become pretty and the other wants to stay the same. In my opinion, everyone don’t have the same values, so everyone should break in and not be afraid of being different. I would like Tally to be more confident and demonstrate who she is.

Recently, a Swedish journalist who was in the circumstances of invasion of a territory, under the name The Smoke, was upset after his return, here is a short report : " What was that! I saw a large ground with many people that were working and living their life normally. Many of them were uglies and were desperated. I was surrounded by snobby people who were tired, it was huge as a place. I couldn’t imagine that place like this could be somewhere between this huge trees, lost in a ugly world. I dont’t know who could have invented this kind of world and why would he have invented it. How does the population act and how is the ground represented, I believe that somoene in this world knows a lot of information. Anyone strange and quiet who could hide in the ruins or something like that. In short, it's not something we often see, but it looks like someone wanted to create a new world to be outside the two current worlds, The Pretty town and the Ugly one. " Thank you and hope you find this person who would known more informations.
