As you know, couplings are used to connect the shafts together to transmit power and disconnect the shafts for maintenance easily. There are two main types of couplings: rigid couplings and flexible couplings. Firstly, Rigid couplings are used to connect shafts in perfect alignment. Rigid couplings can reduce wear on the machine and maximize the performance, efficiency of the machine. Sleeve-style couplings are the common types of rigid couplings. Next, flexible couplings are used to connect the shafts without perfect alignment. Flexible couplings help reduce noise and unwanted vibrations. Beam couplings are the popular types of flexible couplings. Beam couplings are cut in spiral shape. In our life, Couplings are applied popularly in mechanical engineering. Some applications are used in engines, lathes, drills, mills…

Rolling contact bearings have 4 types including ball bearings, straight roller bearings, tapered roller bearings and thrust roller bearings. First,Ball bearings use spherical rollers. They support radial and axial motion. Second, Straight roller bearings use cylindrical rollers. They support radial motion. Next, Tapered roller bearings use conical rollers. They support radial forces and moderate thrust forces. Finally, Thrust roller bearings use barrel-shaped rollers. They support thrust motion. Bearings play an important role in machines.

This paragraph is about some different kinds of gears. As you know, gear is a rotating circular component of a machine with teeth. The functions of gears are to transmit torque and change the speed, torque, and direction of a power source. There are five common types of gears. They are spur gears, helical gears, worm and worm gears, rack and pinion gears and bevel gears. First, spur gears are the simplest types of gears with teeth projecting towards or away from the centre. They are used in low-speed applications because they cannot control noise at high speed. Second, helical gears are similar to spur gears but have teeth in a spiral shape. Helical gears are used in high- speed applications, large power transmission as they run more smoothly and quietly, and control noise. Next, Worm has just one continuous tooth. A worm pairs with a worm gear, which help reduce speed. Moreover, rack and pinion gears consist of a circular gear called the pinion engaging a linear gear called the rack. They are used for converting rotational motion into linear motion.Last, Bevel gears have a conical form and can be used to transmit rotational power through the shafts at an angle, often 90 degrees.

This paragraph is to compare two types of drives. As you know, there are two types of mechanical drives used popularly: belt drives and chain drives. Belt drive are used to transmit motion and power from one shaft to another by means of friction between belt and pulleys. On the contrary, chain drives are used for transmitting motion and power between successive chains with procket special toothed wheels. While belt drives are made of rubber, plastic, urethane, or other substances, chain drives are made of metal with a number of links. Operation of belt drives are different from chain drives. Belt drives reduce noise and vibration but chain drives cause noise and vibration. Slippage occurs in belt drives when load exceeds frictional force, no such slippage occurs in chain drives. So the efficiency of belt drives is comparatively low due to frictional loss while efficiency of chain drives is high, usually 95%. Belt tension is affected by atmospheric conditional and temperature. The performance of belt drives also change with external factors so belt drives require frequent tension. Chain drives are not affected by atmoospheric conditional and temperature, but chains wear out faster if not lubricated so chain drives require regular maintenance including lubrication. Belt drives are prefered for medium to long center distance between driver and driven shafts. Some applications of belts drives are flour mills, coolant pump, lubricant pump, AC,CAM shaft, lathe machines and lots of other machines, belt conveyors…Chain drives are used for short to medium center distance. Chain drives are used in bicycle, motorcycles, agricultural and textile machinery, material handling equipment…

This paragraph is to compare CAD and manual drafting. There are some differences between CAD and manual drafting. CAD is the creation and the handling of pictures on a computer to assist engineers in design drafting, while manual drafting is the practice of creating drawings by hand with pencil or ink on a media such as paper or polyester film using drafting equipment. CAD is used to lay out a preliminary design quickly and make necessary changes. Unlike CAD, manual drafting is used for drafting every single detail (by hand with pecil or ink on paper or polyester film). Designers using CAD need to have minimum operation skills and analytical skills. However, designers making manual drafting need to have designing skills and explaination skills. CAD is different from manual drafting in term of accuracy. CAD provides high accuracy in presentation, less error in explaination. Manual drafting can be easy misreading because of ambiguity and drawing errors. Especially, using CAD can make changes or modifications easily but manual drafting must make changes from the beginning.

NX is released for the first time in 1973. It is a simple, useful and powerful software. NX is used in aerospace, automotive companies… There are some main functions of Siemens NX. First, NX can help users create drawings, 2-D or 3-D moels. Second, It can be used to edit data, link data form various source. Moreover, It also has capabilitiy to collect multiple design elements into a single design feature. Siemens NX brings some advantages for users. NX is fast and flexible software to complete tasks. It can not only create a very high level of control but also track the product through every phrase of the production cycle easily. Last, many companies use NX as it can reduce the companies mistakes and maximize productivity. On the contrary, users find some disadvantages when using NX. First, Lack ease of use is a problem because NX has lots of environments: 2-D, 3-D, assembly, sheet metal, drawing and surface. Next, Interface of Siemens NX is focused more on the layout of icons. So it is difficult for new users…This is the reason NX is required professional training before using it to work effectively. First, plastic is versatile because it can be shaped easily into a wide range of forms. Second,it is durable as it has a long life compared to many others products and retains its shape and strength. Next, it is chemically unreactive since it does not react with air or water and is unaffected by various chemicals. Finally, Plastic is cost-efficent, it can be formed into final useful form quickly and inexpensively. You know, plastic is safe so it can be used in food wrapping, containers and medical applications…Besides, it is also used in manufacturing airplane interiors and exterior parts because it is lightweight. Plastic brings us lots of benefits. It’s convenient and lightweight to use. For example, shopping plastic bags can help us contain things. Second, it’s cheap for packaging and wrapping. Moreover, it’s durable and resistant to all kinds of adverse outside factors such as heavy rain, storm. Especially, it can be reusable. However, using too much plastic will hurt the environment because some types of plastics are not biodegradable and some types of plastics are not recycled. In the past, manufacturers could produce modern synthetic plastic but they couldn’t mould plastic into complex shapes. At present, manufacturers can mould plastic into variety of complex shapes. It is used to replace components in engines and is used in manufacturing to help reduce weight in aircraft. In the future, I think it will save money and increase efficiency by using smart plastic coatings on manufacturing components. Besides, manufacturers will be able to make plastics from any kind of plant materials. It will be possible to use eco-friendly bioplastic in wide range of applications electronics, aerospace and other fields.

This paragraph is about my understand of plastic. As I know, there are 7 types of plastic: PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS and other plastic. First, Plastic number 1 is polyethylene terephthalate. PET has the properties of oxygen prevention. It is also widely recycled so it is used in foof and drink packaging. Second, plastic number 2 is high-density polyethylene. HDPE is hard and resistant to impact. Besides, it is also subjected to high temperature and recyclable. HDPE is used in grocery bags, milk jugs, recycling bins, agricultural pipes and playground equipment….Third, PVC belongs to group number 3. PVC is versatile such as lightness, durability and easiness of process ability but it is hardly recyclable. PVC has two basic form. Rigid form is used in building and construction industry. Flexible form is applied to plumbing, wiring, and electrical cable insulation and flooring. Next, low-density polyethylene belongs to group number 4. LPDE is flexible, odorless, transparent, recylable. It’s used in plastic bags, various containers, plastic wraps…Polypropylene is plastic munber 5. PP is hard, sturdy and resistant to fagitue. PP is used in car parts, yogurt containers, thermal vests… Plastic number 6 is polystyrene. PS is solid, foam, easy to create, high inflammable but dangerous as it leach harmful chemicals especially when heated. It is found in beverage cups, insulation, packing materials to egg cartons …Finally, other plastic is included in group number 7. Plastic in this group is never recycled. It is used for eyes protestion such as lenses for glasses, sport and safety goggles, mobile phones..

As can be seen in figure 1, this is the process of extrusion moulding. There are six steps in this process. First, we move polymers pellets from hopper into cylinder. Second, electric motor turns the screw in the extrusion moulder. Third, cord polymers pellets move along the cylinder. Next, Heaters warm the polymer pellets to turn them into a liquid. After that, the warm, soft molten polymers move along cylinder. Finally, machine pushes the molten polymers out into the mould.

This paragraph is about some typical problems of plastic injection moulding and solutions to these problems. The first problem is short shot. From my point of view, it can be of two reasons. Firstly, there is not enough plastic in the shot. Secondly, the plastic pressure loss in the mould is too high. To attack this problem, we have some solutions. First, I think we should check the shots continuously and use plastic with high melting capability. Then, we had better increase fill speed, plastic and mould temperature. Moreover, we ought to increase the gate size and runner. The second problem is void. In my viewpoint, it can be of two causes. First, it is caused by plastic shrinkage, a hole suddenly develop in a thick section during cooling. Second, plastic volume changes when plastic is heated or cooled. To solve this problem, first we ought to increase the injection pressure to force more material into the mould and reduce shrinkage. Second, we should reduce the wall thickness. Then, we had better slow down cooling rate. Moreover, we need to increase gate size and locate it at the thick part of the moulding. The last problem is sink mark. It happens because the internal stress is too high and the part has too low a surface rigidity. Therefore, the plastic shrinkage occurs on the outside of the part if the plastic cannot shrink by forming avoid inside. I find some solutions to deal with it. First, we need to have enough shot size. Second, we should increase holding pressure and holding time. Then we had better reduce mould temperature and wall thickness for faster cooling.

This paragraph is to present about the maintenance of lathe machine. As you know, a lathe machine is a machine tool which is used to remove unwanted metals from the work piece to give desired shape and size. It operates on the principle of a rotating work piece and a fixed cutting tool. Lathe machine has some main features. First, a lathe works with high speed and accuracy. Second, It has adjustable speed setting to suit with working mode. Last, It can create cylinder, conical shapes and holes to make different products. Machine has worked for a long time needs maintenance to operate within safe and efficiency. Maintenance is a periodic and regular care task to prevent machine damage. It is to keep a machine in good condition by checking or repairing regularly. First, Maintenance Ensures safety for workers. Second, It Lengthens life, performance of machine and Ensures machine work safety and operates at the highest efficiency. Next, It also Ensures products are manufactured with high quality. Moreover, Maintenance Reduces need for replacement and additional costs. Maintenance schedule includes Daily checklist, weekly checklist and semi-annually checklist. In daily checklist, We need to check the water line pressure gauges and the air pressure daily to to ensure that the system operates within safe and efficiency. Besides, We should Warm up the spindle-low speed for 5 minutes eveyday to reduce friction and helps minimize wear. Chip filter is need to be cleaned once a day to remove dust and dirt. In Weekly checklist,We need to Inspect all filter, Check the coolant level, Inspect oil and Top up oil level every week to ensure that machine works effectively. If the oil level was low, the machine would overheat and lead to expensive repairs. In Semi-annually checklist, We need to Inspect spindle bearing and the drive belt every 6 months to prevent slippage and ensure machine works with high efficiency. Moreover, We shoud Change oil twice a year to help machine operate smoothly. If the machine oil changes are necglected, internal parts will overheat and work ineffectively.
