While most people use fanfiction to get more content of the franchise that they already like, I personally also consume written fanwork where they cross different franchises and stories together.
This is usually how I end up finding other stories, and other franchises that I end up falling in love.
I suppose it's the power of people who's dedicated at their work.

My experiences in Roleplaying? Well..I am a bit rusty, and had been doing that for quite some time-
I would say that it's quite fun, but you'd also end up encountering people who takes it way to seriously.
Me included, at one time.

ㅤㅤYou see, I like fanfictions due to the fact that you can see characters who would never interact under normal circumstances, well, interact. However, I'm a lazy person by nature so I never really end up finishing what I want to write. Interacting with other writers gives me the much needed incentive to actually write. 

ㅤㅤIt does have its own cons though (for me as a person). Sometimes, you just can't get the interaction you want for your muse due to differences in what you and other writers want to write; thus, not getting the development you want your muse to have. 

ㅤㅤDespite this, roleplaying is still something I enjoy a lot; even though I'm not a particularly good writer.

I've been roleplaying since I was 12, and, since then, there has always been at least a few people who would do ERP with my characters, even when I said I didn't want to. 
I didn't know what it was, and I didn't know it was wrong at the time, but, now that I'm an adult, I know it wasn't right.
If you are a minor, I highly recommend you only roleplay with other minors when doing romance-themed roleplays (and, for everyone: make it clear you don't do NSFW if you're not into that, and understand it's okay to say no to NSFW rp). Adults and teens, please understand that some people don't want NSFW in their roleplays, whether they're your age or not.
You'll break the other party's brain into thinking that what they don't like is normal. It's not okay. Consent is important, even in roleplay. Only do ERP with consenting parties who are around your age.
Don't do ERP with people significantly older or younger than yourself. I used it as a form of escapism from real life, and the plot can be exhilarating at times.
I've done ship rps, killing games (which are usually based off Danganronpa), fandom roleplays, and non-fandom roleplays!
I love for the chaos, fluff, and angst. Getting to learn of the other person's OC's backstory is such a fulfilling experience once your own character gets close enough to earn that trust. From fight scenes to arson to handholding to rescues, roleplaying with characters, OCs or canon characters, is usually exciting.
Sometimes it takes forever for a roleplay partner to respond, but that's alright.
Some roleplays are short and die of inactivity, while others keep going for years.
It's fantastic.
The beauty of non-fandom rp is the world building. It's very fun. You can make it a dystopian future, medieval drought, or a cult disguised as a paradise land. Jack of all trades, master of none. For me, role-playing gives an opportunity to test our characterization of characters beyond what we've imagined would've happen in fiction. In fanfics, you create the scene, you knew what would happen when those two protagonists met, and the aftermath of those meetings.

In roleplay, you were faced with a different person behind that screen and they would not be exactly as you would expect them to be. Even if they are following a set of guidelines of canon characters and their personalities, there's always the aspect that others might portray the opposing characters differently. I find it interesting in that matter to see the world of make-believe in not black and white but a gray world.

Also, befriending the writer for me is a wonderful way to enhance the RP experience. Be it for ship purposes or plot purposes. Always remember that behind those characters be it someone you adore or hate, there is a writer passionate enough to be said character in a play.
