The struggles that I previously stated are caused by the ignorance of the human mind and experience. There are many people that are raised in environments that stigmatize or vilify different groups of people. Being raised in an environment like that causes prejudice towards those groups of people and overall ignorance. This makes it difficult for people to get along, especially when one party completely misunderstands the other. This causes the ignorance to persist and never be corrected. Once these ignorant people have grown into adults they eventually have families of there own, causing the process to repeat itself.

I believe that the answer is different for each category (religious, political, and social). I think that many people identify with a certain religion because they believe that out of all other religions, the one that they follow is the correct path. Many people can come to this conclusion from how that religion has improved there physical life or their spiritual life. I also would not like to discredit the fact that some people only identify with a religion because they believe that it is significant to their culture. Many people identify with certain politics based on their beliefs system, which usually stems from the religion that they follow (if they follow one). Finally, many people identify with a specific social group because they do not want to feel isolated.

When someone’s beliefs conflict with a groups beliefs, the individual usually gets shut down very quickly. This happens very often, especially if the group is not open minded. I believe that this happens because of the saying “strengths in numbers”. When you have a large group of people that all believe the same thing and then one person that says otherwise the human mind naturally believes that the majority is correct.

a) It is human nature to protect what is cared about. When there is a potential that you will be unable to protect either yourself, your loved ones, or even a comfort people tend to get defensive and point fingers.

a) Different generations have different beliefs, Gen Z has not been raised the same way that a baby boomer was. For this reason many people will catagorize a person based off their age, this causes a lot of turmoil.

Some groups are expectations are extreme and, occasionally, some groups take the refusal of participating in the expectations result in a necessary ban.

An example I can think of is, in my old church, the church's belief and expectations was that ladies are required to wear a dress/skirt. Though it was not an official rule, the church still believed the same. My mother and I do not like to wear dresses/skirts. My mother and I do not believe that women should be required to wear a dress/skirt if they are modest. As a result, many of the ladies attemted to tell my mother and I that we should wear skirts or they would convice us to do so. Because my mother and I didn't share this belief, we wore modest pants/jeans to church every time we went.

These struggles persist because our human nature causes a need for belonging amongst other people in our society. We are pack animals in our nature, and our genetics program us to have specific social instincts in order to "survive". Obviously we have evolved to the point where these instincts are no longer about physical survival like in the primitive ages but rather a longing that we feel to connect with companions.

The one answer that comes to the top of my mind is conversion therapy. The way that this still happens today astonishes me and just proves how individuals get so wrapped up in their beliefs that they would send their loved ones to be physically and emotionally abused while simultaneously convincing themselves that this act is something that a higher power would actually want them to do.

I touched on this earlier but I think the biggest reason that people place themselves within these ideologies is the human need for validation and belonging. We all want to feel needed and like we are contributing to something bigger than ourselves. Even more than that, there is a part of us that wants to feel special, and unique from everyone else. I know I've experienced this, but it is still strange, and I would actually like to know the science behind this.

The first thing that comes to my mind is the immediate feeling of judgement that begins in the group. Our ability to judge as humans is a miracle and a curse. It protects us from potentially harmful scenarios, but is also the reason for harmful stereotypes in our society. If a collective group has the same judgement, it can trigger a fear reaction, which leads to the process of eliminating what our minds perceive as a threat.
