This semester we are learning about Idiomaticity and Conventionality, and at first, I actually didn’t know what it was about, but once we started talking and doing the exercises, I saw that it was kind of fun.
We started the class learning about Corpora and how to use it, and we did a simple presentation, choosing one word to use on it, to really see how it works.
And then we had a lot of different seminars from each class, explaining each text from Moodle, such as colligations, collocations, binomials, agrammatical structures, conventional expressions and idiomatic expressions, which it was the seminar I did, and we had about semantic prosody, collocation and idiom fixed expressions, as well. What I liked the most was that, all the seminars had some activities at the end, which it made it easier for us to understand the subject itself. And each group had a different activity, so we had different ways to participate on the seminars.
What I liked the most, from all the classes we had, was that one we learned about “Color Psychology”, we saw many examples, using every color, and we also saw a video about color in movies, which was really interesting! I used to think that some colors mean something, but watching the video, it showed a different meaning, like I thought yellow means only happiness, joy, but in the video, we saw that it can also mean energy, which makes sense. My favorite color is purple, and I loved that, according to the movies, it can mean “fantasy”.
This subject is not only fun but also important to learn because it teaches us so different expressions in a daytime native speaker and how to translate to our native language without changing its meaning. As a translator, sometimes we have a hard time translating something, due to the words, the sentences that it can be so cultural that it’s hard to bring to our language.

PROVERB WRITING

On June 27th, we had a class about proverb (actually, I missed this one but I studied about it later hehe). We saw a lot of different proverbs, it was cool to learn it.

I chose the German proverb “A clean conscience makes a soft pillow”. This proverb means that when someone doesn’t have anything to worry about, doesn’t have any problem, they have a clean conscience, and that’s why it’s compared to a soft pillow, because it can give comfort and peace to the person. And I can give an example of my working life that has happened recently. I work at CVC at the mall, and one of the things I have to do is to send the voucher to the passengers and give them the instructions of the trip, like what they have to do, the time of the flight, and so on. And there was this woman, who was going to Paris last month, I sent her the voucher and explained to her that she needed to be at the airport four hours before the flight, but she didn’t do it. She missed the flight and came to the store to argue with us. To sum up, I didn’t feel sorry for her or felt guilty, because I did my job, I didn’t do anything wrong, so I was with a clean conscience. I slept in a soft pillow that night.

Eu dormi tranquila aquela noite.

We are getting closer and closer to end the semester and what do I have to say about it? What an adventure!

I don’t know if it’s because last semester we did it online or just the subjects this time that are more practical, but this one has been way fuller of energy. We have talked about conversational gambits, different kind of proverbs, metaphors, and one that I think it was really cool (because it was so specific lol), was about horse idioms. I didn’t know that there were so many examples of horse idioms, and so different meanings as well. It was nice to learn about it, I hope I can remember an example when the moment comes. And then, we have done some more exercises and the final paper, this one, I thought it would be hard to write it but having done it with the girls, again, it was fun. We have discussed together, and it was done in no time.

I can see my progress on this subject and I’m happy about it. My mom is an English teacher, so whenever I learned something new, I would tell her (and then she would pretend she didn’t know to make me feel happy, but anyways). Not only me, but also my classmates have learned a lot as well, we are for sure going to use all the content on our future jobs.

And to the teacher, I want to thank you for teaching us this semester. Unfortunately, in the last classes we weren’t together, but my classmates and I wish you the best on your new job!
