My book is Coping with Depression and Other Mood Disorders by Amy Gelman.

This nonfiction based book talks about forms of depression, treatments of depression and causes of depression. I chose this book because it related to my fiction book. I have not read any other material by the author and do not plan to, as I do not like the nonfiction genre.

This book focuses on depression.

The novel revolves around the different aspects of depression and how people cope with the illness. People diagnosed with depression usually want a cure but due to their trauma and disorders they can not be cured, so their depression worsens as time goes on. The author talks about these aspects and more throughout the book and goes into depth on causes and types of depression.

People the book focuses on are people diagnosed with depression and/or mood disorders. The setting is all around the world, as depression can happen to anybody. Conflicts depressed people can face are suicide attempts, fatal depression, and many other life threatening situtations.

The book is set in third person with a formal word choice and style as the information given is a serious and delicate matter. While there is little to no dialogue, the author sets up the book so that information over mood disorders can be found easily and efficiently.

While I found the book to be morbid (it's about depression, after all), I find it overall informational and insightful. It digs deep into the effects of depression and the causes that make this illness so fatal and potentially life threatening. The author has a section on how depression changes a person which I found interesting, because what Gelman described was a person slowly changing into a negative and sorrowful being from what was once someone full of life and happiness. It shows how these disorders affect nearly one-fifth of the human race.

People who might enjoy this book are teens facing one of these disorders or know a close friend or relative who may have these illnesses. Readers who enjoy factual information may enjoy reading this, but for those who enjoy the fiction genre, this would not be a good choice. For instance, someone who likes sci-fi or fantasy would most likely not enjoy this book as much as someone interested in nonfiction or the medical field.
