To design a warm-up that best fits you purpose, you need to actually consider you purpose. If it is simply to reduce the risk of injury, then you select warm-ups that work on you muscle strength and coordination. If your purpose if to increase you heart rate, then of course, cardio, like running in place, etc. If your purpose is to increase flexibility, then challenge yourself, do some stretches. Whatever your purpose for warming-up is, there are a wide variety of simple warm-up exercise to choose from. You also have to consider other factors such as you age, intensity of the exercise, how much time you have for warm-ups, and whether or not this is your first time, so as not to tire the muscles.
