There are represented lots of sounds and onomatopoeia taken from the futurism movement. As main characteristic it has the speed, the exaltation of the modern as well as creates a big gap from the culture of the past. 

It matters to me as I’m very fascinated by futurism movement as it’s all Italian and it was created during a very bad period for my country. It is a kind of strong response of what was going on that time.

 

They use graphic design as a visual communication device; the figures in the paintings are symbolic representations of stories in Navajo mythology, which depict objects legendary visions and illustrations of dances or chants performed in rituals. 

 

According to Navajo belief, a sandpainting heals because the ritual image serves as a pathway to the heroes depicted in the paintings. The patient sits on the painting while the chanter performs a ritual to enhance its absorption. Power is thought to be absorbed from the sacred objects depicted and a ritual reality is created in which the patient and the supernatural dramatically interact, reestablishing the patient's sense of connectedness to all of life, upon which the patient's spiritual and physical health will improve.

 

This merging of time and space into a place where the present and the mythic past coexist fascinated me. All their designs incorporate a circle since they believe life to be a sacred hoop; the circle of life is timeless and ever flowing. 

The poster I chose is from a local artist, Guy Gibson. I saw this on the Instagram page: @save_nour which explains an ongoing battle between the ‘Taylor Tower’ and the community. The tower’s intention is to impose over the dignified Brixton Village, which to most is considered the heart of the town. Through school and education, I had this image in my head of AIDS being this horrible disease that sounded like a death sentence and could happen to anyone who wasn’t careful enough. 

It wasn’t until recently that I wanted to learn more about the disease, as its history is closely connected to the history of gay and bisexual men. 

The 1980’s AIDS Epidemic which started in the US and had also severely affected London, the United Kingdom and the rest of the world was a time of severe discrimination against gay men and unwillingness to protect a minority from a killing disease. 

In research of public informational campaigns, I discovered this poster that was part of the ‘State of California AIDS Education Campaign’ in the 1990s, and draws public attention to the disease and stresses the use of condoms as protection from the virus. HIV and the disease AIDS are still a stigmatised topic that needs to be talked about.

Today, the stilyagi phenomenon is regarded as one of the Russian historical social trends which further developed during the late Soviet era (notably the Stagnation Period) and allowed "informal" views on life, such as hippies, punks and rappers.

Michael Jackson’s music seemed like a binding element not just between me and my parents, but between generations - a powerful thing that energised the whole house and the whole world.
