The lesson being taught by this play is that no-one can escape their fate. He was a puppet of his fate and by attempting to escape it, he ended up fulfilling it anyway. Perhaps by resisting his fate, he secured it even further.

Oedipus was a puppet of his fate, because with moving away from the kingdom, it set his fate in motion (which he had no control of). Had they kept him in the kingdom, he would have created his own fate, because it would have gone against what they had "learned" from the Oracle.

Assuming the oracle's prediction was perfect, then, at the moment of prophecy, all possible choices Oedipus could've made would've forcefully guided him to marry his mother and kill his father. This might even go so far as to physically prevent him from committing suicide. Otherwise, the prophecy might've also predetermined Oedipus's very own thought patterns, insinuating that Oedipus had no free will at all.
