ABC Chapter 6 Question 7 by Matt Bailey

When Danny speaks with his basketball teammate Steve, he builds himself up by using language that is derogatory to girls. For example, Danny brags, “I’ve got a jump shot that’ll make you cry like a little sissy girl” (115). Later, when Steve asks whether he will be at basketball practice that afternoon, Danny responds, “How else am I gonna make you cry like a little sissy girl?” (117). What does Danny’s use of sexist language reveal about his psyche? Why might Gene Luen Yang have chosen to include these exchanges in his book?

Danny's had to move to multiple schools because "... no one thinks of me as Danny anymore. I'm Chin-Kee's cousin." (pg. 127). So he has to constantly fit into a new environment, not because he looks or acts different, but because he's associated with someone who is very different. Because of this, he tries to be a standout in a positive way, while also trying to fit in with everyone else, in hopes of someday out shadowing Chin-Kee's impression on everybody, like how he got on the basketball team. Something he's tried in order to fit in is to use the same speech that others likely use, hence the sexist language. Interestingly, despite disliking Chin-Kee to an extreme, he doesn't say anything racist, though this may be because everyone knows that Chin-Kee and Danny are related, and thus any racist comments might be turned on him. So, to sum up, Danny uses the sexist language that he uses because it's what everyone else uses.

Yang was pointing out another problem in our society. Sexism. In high school it is instilled in everyone's mind that girls are the weaker gender and it's okay to make comments like "I'm going to make you cry like a little sissy girl." Yang uses Danny as an example of this. Danny himself sees girls as the weaker gender even if he doesn't realize it. He associates being feminine as a bad thing. He also associates being emotional as a girls thing and not a human reaction.

throughout the book there are many different comments and indications of sexism and racism. Danny is not unlike his peers. he makes multiple remarks of sexism, maybe without even knowing. He may be doing it because that was the environment that he was brought up in. he says "sissy girl"(115, 117) only to Steve. I may be a way the basketball players say.

I have noticed in just normal society sexism occurs all the time without people even realize what they're saying. It could be the same for him, though it could also be since he's had so many racist acts towards him its his way of biting back. Which is by using sexism as a tool to hurt others. It could be that the authors also wants to point out how carelessly we use racist and sexist terms.

The author my have included Danny's sexist language as a typical american stereotype seen by Asian country's to exaggerate the difference between Danny and Chin-Kee. The way Danny acts and talks suggest that he is supposed to represent the typical american stereotype.

This shows that Danny is trying to make himself feel better than he does at the moment, so he uses sexist language to make himself feel good. Whether Danny is intentionally saying sexist stuff, or it just comes out for him, its a good indicator of where his psyche is at. Ive also seen other people see this as Dannys way to engage with his peers, which i think fits. Yang did a great job showing how just nonchalantly people use racist and sexist terms without really thinking about it.

He used to be super nice and would tell people to not say things like that. But now he is the one doing it. He is turning into a bully who puts others down to make him feel better. I think he included this in his book to show that even nice people have a lot going through their head. And they might change. Very fast.

Danny is so focused on Chin-Kee that he is unable to see his own short-comings. When he talks to Melanie, she tells him she just wants to be friends, and Danny gets upset. He tells her he isn't like Chin-Kee, that he doesn't even know how they're related. However, when Danny is talking to Steve, he uses derogatory language towards women. I think that maybe Melanie doesn't want to date him because he talks like that. Yet, Danny is so focused on Chin-Kee that he is unable to see any other reason why Melanie may not want to date him. This happens a lot today, with people being so focused on one thing, that they are unable to see why someone wouldn't want to date them.
