Due to Covid-19 restrictions on site this year we will be running the Engineering Taster Week virtually. Last year’s Engineering Taster Week was also run virtually and was a great success. We will be looking to build on the success of last year and ensure that all tasks are fun and engaging so that students get the same experience, even when participating online.

Engineering Taster Week is an educational event which gives students a wide range of experiences of real-world engineering tasks. Throughout the week, students will partake in a challenging week-long Systems Engineering project intended to develop their team working skills, leadership qualities and engineering experience. Alongside the main project there will also be smaller tasks focused on disciplines of engineering including Hardware, Software, and Mechanical Engineering, as well as a Behind Enemy Lines task which will stretch the student’s team working and communication skills in a time pressure scenario. This will be supplemented with expert talks for each engineering discipline from experienced engineers at BAE Systems Rochester. 

Through the combination of expert talks and practical tasks, the students will gain a thorough understanding of the variety of future careers within STEM subjects. This will help them to understand which areas of engineering best suits their interests. We will also help students learn about the different career paths in the Engineering sector, and the opportunities that are available within the company to support their career. These include post-secondary school apprenticeships, summer placement, industrial placements, and the graduate scheme. Engineering Taster Week is primarily ran by apprentices and graduates, allowing students to get an opportunity to see what early careers at BAE Systems Rochester can look like.

Due to the limited number of places available and the popularity of the event, there is a formal application process. Students are encouraged to apply promptly once the application window opens on 8^th March via the Engineering Taster Week webpage until the 3^rd May when applications close. Successful applicants will then be notified a few weeks after applications close.

To assist with promoting this event to your students and to provide as many students as possible with the opportunity to apply for the event, we have leaflets and posters to highlight the experience to your students. This will allow them to gain a better understanding of the Engineering Taster Week and what they can expect from the week. If you believe that Engineering Taster Week would be a beneficial experience for your students we ask that you could share these posters and leaflets with them. Both of these events are female focused meaning the sessions will be led by a number of senior and apprentice level female speakers with the intention of inspiring the next generation of young ladies to take careers in their business / industry. With that said, both events are more than welcome for males to join as well.

The first event is our STEM & Business Multi-Employer event taking place on Tuesday 8th March from 5:00pm - 6:30pm. 

 

We have PwC, Capgemini, Virgin Media, Spectris and GSK all coming to speak about life at their respective firms and to showcase the various career paths and school-leaver opportunities.

 

As you can see we have a variety of organisations coming to speak about business, technology, engineering and healthcare / pharmaceuticals so it’s a really great chance for young female students to hear from a range of different employers and see which kind of career path would be most of interest.

Our second event taking place again on Tuesday 8th March from 5:00pm - 6:00pm is our Careers in Property Development, Architecture and Design.

 

We have teamed up with FTSE-100 constituent Berkeley St Edward who will be giving us an insight into careers working in property development. 

 

We are also being treated to talks from an architect and a designer or two as they let us know the kind of work they get up to on a daily basis and the best tips on securing a career within this competitive industry.
