By my experience I can tell that when parents feel they are heard they become more involved and place themselfs beside teachers in school matters and by that the students learning improves.

Families are the largest allies of an "open door" school, open to parental opinion, to participation in school activities. Collaborative work between school, family and students can lead to successful learning. Parents have to be understood as partners and not as intruders.

Parental engagement in activities that are focused on student learning must be prepared thoroughly and carefully (ideally from the start of the year) according to what role is appropriate (audience, student support, source of knowledge, organisers or even evaluators).
From my experience, it seems to be much easier to get parents' participation as audience or students' supportors rather than as other roles.
Nevertheless, most parents tend to get engaged whenever they really feel that their participation is important to their childs' wellbeing and success. Therefore, school (as a whole) and teachers individually should develop activities that stimulate parents to participate and build simple and effective communication channels between them (between school and family).
