Integration of recycled materials in Architecture in Malaysia

In Malaysia, disposing construction waste directly to landfill sites is the most common approach in managing construction wastes. This method is chosen among contractors in Malaysia because the waste materials is assumed to have little premium value. There are less awareness on the importances and benefit of reusing reclaimed building materials. Limited attention has been given on the adoption of recycling and reuse as part of strategies to minimize construction waste dumped onto the landfill.

Recycled materials can be applied in various ways. In this study, various products can be recycled for use construction purposes such in highway pavement, aggregates, thermal insulation, additives in building materials, and also used as main structure element. The use of sustainable materials in buildings has become an important factor in producing sustainable buildings. The building materials will be added or replaced with some waste materials and recycled materials to make the building materials more environmentally friendly.

Recycled materials encourage innovation in architectural design by questioning convention and embracing imperfections to achieve unique expressions. Through innovation, spaces are designed to inspire future architecture and promote sustainable development. In a world marked by political and social turmoil, the quest for safer cities is driving the demand for technological solutions like CCTV surveillance. These technologies are praised as saviors from rising crime and chaos, yet their effectiveness in addressing complex societal problems remains uncertain. However, it is clear that as technology has become increasingly sophisticated, our freedoms have gradually eroded.

Architects and designers are developing innovative counter-surveillance measures to address privacy, autonomy, and social ethics concerns.

A central aspect of these strategies involves the use of materials that disrupt surveillance technologies. Maintaining anonymity in public spaces can be vital for some individuals, for their own safety, if they are well-known or public figures, or for people who work in particular industries. - planning of urban layouts and spatial organization has also become integral to counter-surveillance architecture.

City in the Sky Concept: Megacity is best defined as a metropolitan area that has a total population in excess of 10 million people whom accordingly emphasizes life in the future. There are numerous exquisite mega-cities in sci-fi literature, but from my own perspective I believe they need a visual medium to truly do them justice.

Here, we present a real good example for a city in the sky of the future by Tsvetan Toshkov, a visionary architect who demonstrates the sky is not the limit for his imagination as he goes beyond it, exploring new ideas and features. Recently, Tsvetan unveiled a challenging concept for a futuristic city that looks promising for sustainable tomorrow. The lotus- inspired city, far above any familiar sky-scrapers is still under development, presents an imagery long-beloved sustainable vision with steep perspectives of a friction-less, super-shiny and super-clean city.

In the city in the sky; live, work, shopping, entertainment and educational spaces are all built into the layers of this futuristic urban design. The cultural life of this self-contained city is focused internally yet the structural forms of the rising Lotus flowers stalks, which ring them speak to and have views out to the surrounding area. While on the top, the Lotus leaves fuze and expand over the everyday buzz, smog and city dirt turning this new urban design into tranquil oasis above the polluted urban life.

It can also help reduce waste from construction and build things faster because some parts can be made right on-site. While Malaysia has a few 3D-printed buildings and research projects, it's still not being used very often. So far, most research has focused on small models or using 3D printing for decoration. There also aren't many special materials or trained workers available yet. Plus, there aren't any clear rules yet for buildings made with 3D printing, which makes things uncertain for architects and construction companies.

This art form, often steeped in controversy, often influence perceptions of architectural spaces among the community. Graffiti art faces consequences in terms of property values and community cohesion. Graffiti art now contends for artistic acceptance and legalization to shape the overall urban experience in the present day. 

Existing literature focuses on regulated graffiti or street art, often overlooking the distinct challenges posed by unauthorized tagging and defacement. The gap lies in understanding the specific consequences and perceptions associated with non-regulated graffiti art, which differs significantly from regulated forms of street art in terms of its legality, intent, and visual impact. By filling this gap, valuable insights into the nuanced dynamics of graffiti in urban spaces are provided and targeted interventions are informed to address its negative effects.

Despite architects in the city center focusing on commercial and cultural facilities, there's a notable oversight in designing healthcare facilities within residential complexes. This exacerbates disease spread, highlighting the need for targeted interventions. Given the city high density and diverse demographics, urgent exploration of integrating healthcare design and pandemic preparedness is crucial to safeguard residents' health.

Gap:

Despite recognizing the significance of integrating healthcare design with pandemic preparedness in residential buildings, there exists a notable research gap specific to KLCC. Existing literature predominantly focuses on healthcare facilities or broader urban areas, neglecting the distinctive challenges and opportunities presented by residential buildings in KLCC. Addressing this gap requires localized research examining the intersection of healthcare design and pandemic preparedness within urban fabric, considering factors like building typologies, community dynamics, and regulatory frameworks.

Purpose/Objectives/Aim of the Study (POD/AIM):

This study aims to examine the seamless integration of healthcare design principles and pandemic preparedness strategies within residential buildings in Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC). Through this investigation, the research endeavors to formulate contextually relevant guidelines aimed at bolstering community resilience against infectious disease outbreaks. By devising tailored strategies and interventions, the study seeks to enhance health outcomes and foster overall well-being in the urban center, addressing the imperative for locally tailored approaches to pandemic preparedness in residential settings.

However it was only within the last century or so that many traditional architectural practices were abandoned in favor of universal architectural designs that typically overlook the local climate factors. Despite the development of building code and regulation there’s still a noticeable lack of regulations in support of or incentivizing climate responsive design principles.

Furthermore, there is limited research on design and planning requirements in response to Malaysia's  tropical climate with hot, humid weather all year.

To bridge this gap, this study endeavors to explore strategies to overcome resistance to implementing emotional well-being principles in Malaysian public architecture. Utilizing qualitative research methods such as case studies, interviews, and surveys, the research aims to identify common challenges faced by architects, planners, and policymakers. By unraveling these barriers and analyzing successful examples, the study seeks to develop pragmatic guidelines and recommendations. Ultimately, the goal is to enrich the quality of public life in Malaysian cities by promoting user well-being and satisfaction through emotionally supportive public spaces.

While sustainable design is undoubtedly a positive trend in architecture, there are still challenges that need to be addressed. the idea of “sustainability” is not environmentally responsible from today's vantage point. The term "sustainability" is problematic, as it suggests passivity and not environmental responsibility. Sustainability implies maintaining the status quo, rather than actively working towards positive change. It can give the false impression that simply sustaining current practices is enough to protect the environment and ensure a better future for generations to come. In reality, true sustainability requires proactive measures to reduce our impact on the planet and promote long-term ecological health.

Existing literature focuses on sustainability emerged as a concept to ensure that human activities could continue indefinitely without depleting resources or causing irreparable harm to the environment, rather than actively addressing environmental degradation. There is a lack of urgency or proactive action toward addressing pressing environmental issues.

Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap by conducting a comprehensive analysis of sustainable architecture projects that successfully meet the challenges of climate crisis like rising sea levels, droughts, and frequent wildfires. •The result show that flood prone areas in Malaysia, the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia include almost all states from Kelantan to Johor is prone to flooding because of the sea level rising issue. 2024 marks a new time record for the population of Kuala Lumpur, staggering at 8,816,000 people with the growth rate of 2.25% despite already being the one of the most dense city in Malaysia. With many job opportunity and businesses within its district, 73.5% of the population are working age ranging from 20 to 64 years old. Millennials swarms Kuala Lumpur seeking a place to stay, living closer to their work place for convenience.

With the cost of living today, these millennials that only begin their career journey struggles to sustain a living in Kuala Lumpur. They often face challenges in seeking to find affordable housing and keeping their balance life in check. Hence why the quality of life in Kuala Lumpur is below average.

Existing literature primarily addresses the approach on affordable housing or the Architectural approach for well being of the occupants. However, limited research in incorporating both. Often one or the other.

The aim of the study is to determine the architectural approach for an efficient affordable housing while sustaining the very well being and contentment of the occupants by conducting a comprehensive analysis of existing architectural project that are successful in incorporating affordability with well being.

As cities experience densification and urbanization, the question of 'where do the children play?' has gained vital importance. Changes in neighbourhood environments have significantly impacted the play and peer interactions of children. Urban streets and public spaces foster a decrease in their outdoor freedom despite an increase in freedom at home.

Children have become increasingly relegated to ‘child spaces’ in the city and seen as increasingly unwelcome in parts of the city. Besides, family with children living in apartments are now an increasingly common demographic. It raises a critical question regarding whether high-density cities can truly be child-friendly.

GAP:

The profound gap lies in exploring how spatial and architectural solutions can facilitate the integration of play opportunities into the urban fabric of compact cities. Current design solutions that heavily regulated by adults often overlooks the needs of children, leading to inadequate play spaces and limited opportunities for independent mobility.

Aim of the Study:

The research is to explore spatial and architectural approaches that foster child-friendly architecture in high-density urban settings. Addressing this gap ensures the compact city vision is inclusive to all as a place where children are free to play will definitely be a place for all ages to enjoy together.

• Climate change disrupts natural systems and decreases the environmental quality. Natural hazards, such as heatwaves, extreme weather, and food system disruption, influence human health as well as transportation, infrastructure, and global trade. The CO2 emissions of Southeast Asian countries increased from 711 MT in 2000 to 1288 MT in 2015; they constitute the world’s most developing regions in terms of electricity consumption. Urbanization is generally a crucial factor affecting total energy consumption because the residential sector is considered as the second highest consumer of electricity after the industrial sector. Studies have showed that a strong relation exists between gross domestic product growth and electricity demand; therefore, serious actions are required for environmental protection and energy conservation as they are important topics for ensuring sustainability.

Motivational problem statement

• The research field of climate change mitigation has evolved over the last few decades owing to public concern, the development of innovative technology, and improved computational and analytical power for sustainability and future generation. Among various energy-saving and environmental-friendly technologies, the ground source heat pump (GSHP) has been widely applied for space cooling and heating in several countries because it can reduce electricity consumption. This air-conditioning system transfers heat to/from underground by circulating water to control the room temperature in buildings. The GSHP mainly uses the subsurface as a heat sink or a heat source with its operating system comprising a heat pump, a ground-coupled heat ex-changer, and a conditioned air distribution system.

GAP

• Despite its numerous benefits, the extensive application of the GSHP is still limited to tropical regions. First, there are technical problems with GSHP applications in the Southeast Asian region. The GSHP system is mainly used for space cooling in tropical climates, leading to a thermal imbalance between heat rejection and extraction; this phenomenon may also decrease the efficiency of the system. Temperature differences between the underground areas and the atmosphere are mostly quite small for GSHP application; thus, data on GSHP performance in tropical climate conditions are limited. Second, financial and market problems are considered; the initial cost of a GSHP is higher than that of a conventional AC resulting in the absence of a GSHP market in Southeast Asia. Finally, government regulations on renewable energy usage remain limited. However, a subsurface cooling system can still be applied under tropical climates if supplementary measurements are applied to prevent an increase in the ground temperature.

P.O.D

• This study aims the GSHP systems applications in Malaysia; several applications of GSHP in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam have been addressed. Experiments were initiated in 2006 in Kamphaengphet (Thailand); the latest experiment found in the Scopus searching tool is the GSHP simulation in Kuantan in 2019 using EnergyPlus using the ground loop design software. GSHP systems have the potential to be used in Malaysia despite the dominance of cooling demand, leading to a thermal imbalance within the subsurface. This imbalance can reduce the performance of the system; however, groundwater flow is considered as a key factor in preventing the effect of thermal distribution owing to GSHP operation. These results suggest that the GSHP has the potential to reduce emissions and electricity consumption within areas having tropical climates, such as Southeast Asia, for sustainability and future generation.

Despite efforts to promote inclusivity, there is a lack of research focusing on the design of play spaces specifically tailored to children of diverse abilities in Malaysia. This gap in knowledge hampers the development of inclusive playgrounds that accommodate the needs of all children, regardless of their physical, sensory, or cognitive abilities.

Existing literature on playspace design tends to prioritize mainstream perspectives and overlooks the specific requirements of children with disabilities in Malaysian contexts. There is a need for empirical research and practical guidelines tailored to local conditions to inform the design and implementation of inclusive play spaces.

This research aims to address the gap in knowledge by investigating the design of play spaces that cater to children of diverse abilities in Malaysia. The study seeks to identify the unique needs and preferences of children with disabilities, explore innovative design strategies for promoting inclusivity and accessibility, and develop guidelines to inform the planning and implementation of inclusive playgrounds across Malaysia. Despite its effectiveness, there remains a lack of utilization of parametric architecture in Malaysian construction design.

Furthermore, there is limited research on how architects can use parametric architecture for the purpose of design and aesthetics.

Hence, the research aims to study on the effective ways on how parametric architecture can help explore design outcomes and help architects go beyond the traditional methods of designing.

The implementation of green building projects in Malaysia is confronted with various challenges, hindering the widespread adoption of sustainable construction practices. These challenges pose obstacles to achieving environmental goals and fostering sustainable development.

Although there exists some research on green building practices in Malaysia, there is a notable gap in understanding the specific challenges encountered in implementing green building projects. Previous studies have often focused on the benefits of green building or general challenges in the construction industry, overlooking the unique barriers faced by stakeholders involved in green building projects in Malaysia.

The aim of this study is to investigate the challenges associated with implementing green building projects in Malaysia and to propose strategies for overcoming these obstacles.

Problem Statement: Despite the increasing awareness of the importance of sustainable architecture, there remains a significant gap in the integration of biomimicry principles into mainstream architectural practice. Many architects lack a comprehensive understanding of how to effectively apply biomimetic concepts in building design, resulting in missed opportunities to create truly sustainable and resilient structures. Furthermore, there is a need for research that explores the practical implementation of biomimetic strategies, addressing challenges such as scalability, material selection, and cost-effectiveness.

Gap: The gap lies in the absence of a systematic framework that guides architects in incorporating biomimicry principles into the design process, from conceptualization to construction. While there is a wealth of theoretical literature on biomimetic design, there is a lack of practical guidance tailored to the needs of architectural professionals. Additionally, existing case studies often focus on isolated examples rather than offering holistic approaches that can be widely adopted in architectural practice. Bridging this gap requires research that synthesizes theoretical knowledge with practical insights, providing architects with the tools and methodologies necessary to integrate biomimicry effectively into their design practice.

Purpose/Objectives of the Study: The primary objective of this study is to develop a practical framework for integrating biomimicry principles into sustainable architectural design. Specifically, the study aims to:

• Identify key biomimetic strategies and principles applicable to architectural design.

• Investigate case studies of successful biomimetic architecture projects to extract best practices and lessons learned.

• Develop a systematic framework that guides architects through the process of integrating biomimicry into the various stages of building design.

• Validate the effectiveness of the framework through simulations, prototypes, and real-world applications.

However, there's limited research on how to effectively integrate vertical greenery into high-rise architecture in the context of Kuala Lumpur to mitigate the specific impacts of land development.

While some studies explore individual aspects, such as environmental benefits or architectural strategies, there's a need for research that addresses the unique challenges and opportunities in Kuala Lumpur's urban landscape.

This study aims to investigate the integration of vertical greenery into high-rise architecture in Kuala Lumpur to mitigate the impacts of land development through qualitative and quantitative methods, It seeks to explore the benefits, architectural strategies, challenges, and propose guidelines tailored to the local context. By addressing these research objectives, the study aims to contribute to sustainable urban development practices in Kuala Lumpur.
