While it may be difficult and intimidating, teachers should be doing what is best for their specific students and researching new techniques and strategies to use in the classroom. We always want to improve upon our past experiences and lessons, creating the best educational experience for all students.

While English is important and should be emphasized, working alongside one's students and allowing them to incorporate their home languages is the way to do it.

Since immigrant students are often emergent bilinguals, the areas of need for these students often intersect and influence each other regarding where they need extra help or consideration. The APA lists ways to help these students with language, social and emotional learning, academic issues, and immigrant status in general.

Research has shown that immigrant students are producing better test scores over time which can suggest that progressing educational policies can "complement social policies in fostering integration"("Helping immigrant students, 2015, p.5). 

This source also does a great job in explaining exactly what hinders immigrant students' achievement and the steps that can be taken to help. These steps may include according to the report providing information to the parents of the students about schooling options, addressing language barriers, etc.

The ACLU does a good job in giving the layout of what federal laws and rules apply when dealing with immigrant students, as well as giving tips for the best ways upon going about dealing with immigrant students and putting them in contact with proper resources. The article also has a great "What If?" section where details are given about what would happen in ICE got involved, etc.

Societal pressures to assimilate and learn English can be really hard on a child so it is important as teachers to be aware of this and make it easier for the student. The excerpt explains how we want to promote and maintain home languages as they will help these emergent bilingual students learn in the long run and feel like their cultures and backgrounds are valued in the classroom.
